How long did it take to build up enough clientele to pay off your debt?

I'm a high school student looking to purse a career in cosmetology once I've graduated.

Hi Emery,

That's awesome that you already know you want to go into cosmetology. You're ahead of the game!

Here are a few things you can start doing right now while you're still in high school:

Take helpful classes –> Science classes like biology or chemistry will actually come in handy later (especially when learning about skin and hair), and art classes can help with creativity and color theory.

Practice whenever you can –> Try doing friends’ makeup, braids, or nails. The more hands-on experience you get, the better. You’ll build confidence and start figuring out what you love most.

Watch and learn online –> Follow licensed cosmetologists on TikTok, YouTube, Facebook and Instagram. Pay attention not just to their techniques, but also how they interact with clients and run their business.

Look into local cosmetology schools –> Some states (including Arkansas) offer dual-enrollment or summer programs for high school students. Ask your school counselor or check with local beauty schools to see what’s available.

Think about shadowing –> If there’s a salon near you, see if they’ll let you come in and observe, maybe a volunteering program or internship. Even just watching how a salon runs can teach you a lot.

After high school, you’ll need to attend a state-approved cosmetology school and pass your state’s licensing exam to start working legally. But by preparing now, you’ll be way ahead when the time comes.

Good luck! You're on a great path already!

Hi Emery,

Actually, I am not from cosmetology industry but I know a little about business.

I guess it will take you around 14-23 months to have your clientele and of course if you are professional and flexible enough it will increase only.

Do not forget about advertisement like having your own brand account through social-media channels and share your works.

People might see and like it.

Hope it helps,

Regards,

Narina
