What can I do in college to help pursue and prepare myself for a career neuropsychology?

I'm starting college in Fall of 2025 and want to gain some insight on how I can set myself up to excel in neuropsychology- the profession I plan on going into. What extracurricular work/experience would be recommended to do so?

Congratulations on entering college this Fall; I hope you have a terrific experience! This is an excellent question, and J has given sound advice.

Neuropsychologists can do research, clinical work, or a combination of both. If you might be interested in clinical work, I suggest getting some experience there as well. This could be in the form of volunteer work (perhaps through your school's volunteer umbrella) or an internship. Even if you are not doing neuropsychology work, you could get a sense of whether you like the environment and perhaps get to observe how professionals interact. There has been quite a bit of research recently on neuroscience and learning so even tutoring could give you a sense of how neuroscience can be applied.

I have left two references for you below. I like the neuropsychologist's point about a broad education. He says learning about one subject can give insights into another (especially if you are interested in how the brain works) and doing research in anything helps your research skills. I hope this helps. Good luck!

J’s Answer

Good day,

To prepare for a career in neuropsychology, aside from majoring in biology and minoring in psychology or majoring in psychology and minoring in biology, I would suggest that you connect with your instructors early. Do not hesitate to let them know what you are interested in becoming. Finding a faculty mentor who can provide practical experience and experience on how to conduct research is important. If you are going to attend a school with a cognitive science lab or faculty interested in cognitive science, see if you can work in the lab or with the faculty member. If your institution does not have either, I ask that you please don't worry. Working with a faculty member in general and tailoring your research projects and papers around neuroscience will help. Also, learning to do research and think critically will go a long way.

I hope this helps. You will more than likely receive a lot of pointers. Make a list of the pointers and carry them with you. As you grow and learn about your field, and when you connect with your faculty mentor, you can adjust your list.

I wish you the best.
