Start by gaining experience on a regular hospital floor as a nurse before moving into critical care areas. This will help you be more ready for the specialized units.

If you decide to go the military route, your options might vary. As Martin had mentioned if you're not able to get a job in an ICU or PICU straight out of school, I would get some med-surg experience under your belt, as those skills are translatable to a lot of other speciality areas. Depending on the demands of your schooling another option might be to try and get a part time job as a tech working in the ICU or PICU. You'll get some direct exposure to those environments and if all works out they might offer you a job as a nurse after you finish school and pass your NCLEX. Flight nursing you'll likely need to have put in time in the ICU/ER before you might be considered for that type of role. But much credit that you're thinking ahead of possible areas you want to work in and wishing you the best as you continue your studies.
