A lot of this depends on the size of the “small town” and surrounding area. Most chiropractors have patients that are not directly in the town they practice in. I’ve had patients that travel an hour to be seen and that’s not uncommon.

Nowadays, word of mouth alone won’t be enough to sustain your practice and you will need to have a presence on social media and also have advertising. Your reputation will greatly impact your ability to attract patients.

It can allow you to be supportive of your family but you also have to limit your costs compared to what you are bringing in. Starting off may be difficult as you grow.

To get a good idea, ask to shadow several different chiropractors that are around your area. It’s the easiest way to get exposure to the profession.

Michelle’s Answer

Hello, Weston !

It would really be awesome if you had a peek at your life ten years from now, but no one can tell you that. If you have a strong interest in Chiropractic, definitely follow through with this superb career. If you need to project into the future and micro-analyze this career, it may not be for you or you just may need to become more familiar with it. Be true to yourself and focus on the path towards this wonderful career.

For now, let's take a walk through the path that one must take that will lead to a career as a Chiropractor. After graduating high school, you would go to college for a Degree in Anatomy. This is important because you will have to know the names and locations of nerves, bones, muscles, ligaments and organs of the human body and how each one is connected to the other. So Anatomy would be the best Major for your Bachelors Degree.

Once you obtain your Bachelors Degree, you apply to Chiropractic School to work towards your Doctor of Chiropractic degree. Chiropractic School can last from 3 to 5 years. After graduating Chiropractic School, you take a State exam for your License to practice Chiropractic. The exam you take for your license tests you on chiropractic knowledge and skills. To maintain your license you will need to take continuing education to keep up with the latest in chiropractic research and what's new in this field. Typically, the usual length of time is about 7 to 8 years after high school.

So if you can first consider the academic path, and know you're interested, take things a step at a time. You are going to learn most of being a Chiropractor at Chiropractic School wherever you attend. Know that no matter what careers people choose, they have a personal life, they have and/or start a family and engage in activities outside of work. Your life is going to be what you make it.

I hope this helps and I wish you the very best !
