Unique career options in Health/Medicine that aren't a Doctor or PT?
I am currently majoring in Exercise Physiology and I am also getting my EMT certificate right now. I am really enjoying my EMT class, but am wondering what I can do with both an EMT certificate and an Exercise Physiology undergraduate degree after I graduate. Will I need to go and get a graduate degree or above to have a substantial job after college that includes my love of health and medicine?

Hi! I admire your ambition. As a retired medical laboratory scientist, I have known other lab staff who also worked as EMTs. I don't know anyone in exercise physiology, but I suspect it's also possible. There might be some schedule juggling involved, but I'm sure it could be worked out. There are some levels of lab work that you can perform without the BS and practicum. It depends on the CLIA complexity of the testing. Many of the more common lab tests don't require the specific lab degree and many clinics or physician office labs have a need for such staff. Plus, they typically are closed weekends and holidays which could make schedule juggling easier. Plus...whether it's emergency care, physical fitness or lab work, it's all related and the moe knowledge in multiple areas, the better! Best to you on your career path!

Hi Sadie,
So many unique and exciting career paths in health and medicine that don’t involve being a doctor or personal training exist.
As a medical illustrator you create visual representations for journals, books and educational materials with the use of science and art. You could also opt to be a genetic counsellor by helping individuals understand genetic disorders and assessing risks for inherited conditions by providing guidance on testing and family planning. Being a Clinical Bioinformatic will enable you to use data analysis and computational tools to interpret biological data especially in genomics and personalized medicine. A Medical Science Liaison acts as a bridge between pharmaceutical companies and the medical community, sharing scientific information about new drugs and therapies.
These few highlighted careers show how diverse and multidisciplinary the health field can be. Each one of them combines unique skills to contribute to people’s wellbeing in unique ways.
I hope this helps
All the best.

The combination of an education in Exercise Science and EMT could bode you well if you'd want to pursue a career in the human sciences. For example, a person with this education and background could pursue a career as an Exercise Physiologist, a Strength and Conditioning Specialist, or in other aspects of the human sciences and performance. With such an obvious interest in the human sciences and knowledge of anatomy and physiology, a person with this combined background can enjoy a career in a wide-range of professional pursuits involving human performance.
