Pavel’s Answer

We value creativity and the artist and his work for creativity, that is, not following trends, creating new forms, searching for non-obvious solutions. A person's personality is unique, even if we assume that two people have the same experience, their perception will be different. Therefore, we value in art precisely the manifestation of the author, the affirmation of his personality, because a work of art is a statement. That is, creativity is a dialogue. Creativity is one of the methods of knowing the world and oneself, a way of thinking. Plato wrote that every knowledge is a memory, meaning that thinking is built as a dialogue with the future self, with one's own "I" in the future and with one's subconscious "I". A creative approach provokes thinking, not acting according to an algorithm, to look for an answer independently, to improvise. Carl Gustav Jung defined consciousness as the ability to respond to stimuli, and consciousness is formed and affirmed through thinking. Modern education strives to follow an algorithm, not a dialogue: the answer cannot contain a rethinking of the material and must fully correspond to the content of the textbook, and even more so the student cannot add anything from himself. And it is better for the student not to try to answer if he does not know for sure. Education prepares and provokes for life according to an algorithm marked by various social markers: a certain dress code, certain symbols and signs of "successful success", diplomas from certain universities, bank savings and a social rating in certain social networks, reflected in the number of subscribers, views, "likes" and so on. Even knowledge testing, like all educational management, checks the algorithm and adherence to it, but does not check thinking. What we call "artificial intelligence" or a neural network, which is increasingly used in the modern world, uses an algorithm, an imitation of thinking, but not thinking and consciousness. However, life (being) is obviously arranged differently - no one knows anything for sure. Life and its challenges in an ever-changing context require improvisation and creativity, since the degree of our ignorance about the world around us and ourselves in it is always incomparably greater than what can be called knowledge, which, moreover, is most often relative. Education is something important and necessary, but if presented in a certain form, it can become not only meaningless, but also destructive. In creative activities, there is no learning algorithm. There are no answers at the end of the textbook, and the final scores are not reduced if the student's "answer" does not correspond to the teacher's idea. Creativity is always an "action", an act of unexpected choices and non-obvious decisions, and any action is divine in its essence, since it is evidence of the intention of the human soul, a trace of thinking as such, a fixation of internal movements directed by consciousness. This is perhaps the main importance of creative activities, which free a person from the routine grayness of everyday life, spiritual callousness, following the algorithm and freeing from the "comfort" of inaction. from all of the above it follows that you should avoid using the phone, social networks and turn inward to yourself, reflect on your own life, look for an exclusive form for your exclusive content, avoid cliches and stamps

Kim’s Answer

Hi Caelyn,

I'm not sure I'm understanding your question correctly. Are you talking about specific high-quality tutorials you might do? I've seen some interesting ads on Instagram for Domestika and was thinking about trying one. You can also look on YouTube for tutorials. Or if you're looking for ideas, I'd look at as much art and fine craft in real life as possible. Try books and industry websites like Artsy. You can also get free subscriptions to industry news from ArtNews and see what's showing at museums and galleries. If you want to sell at mainstream craft shows and art fairs, you'll want to stay on top of trends; those kind of audiences are looking for what's popular at the moment--you're probably better off looking at Etsy than Artsy, and following DIY channels on YouTube. You can also follow interior designers if you're interested in home and commercial decor.

I'm sure this will be an unpopular answer, but I'd suggest focusing on using your hands to develop your creativity--particularly at this time in your development. The brain is activated in different ways when you use analog processes. I'm not at all anti-technology or suggesting you shouldn't take advantage of digital technologies, but if you're looking for the best ways to boost your creative skills, I'd start by working directly with materials--drawing, painting, sculpture.

Desktops and phones are great production tools, but users tend to fall back on what the tools lend themselves to, and that will limit results. Also, when you talk about "crafts," those tend to be things people make with their hands--even if they're aided by digital tools like laser cutters and 3D printers too.

Hope this helps!

Start here:

https://procreate.com/procreate

Procreate can be purchased with a single low fee and does not require a subscription to get rid of adds or access additional features. It can only be used with an iPad however.

Adobe has a free drawing app which has a good set of features. It is designed to work with Photoshop however, so more advanced work will require a subscription to this software:

https://www.adobe.com/products/fresco.html

Mediabang is great because they make a version that can be used on a computer, not just an iPad like Procreate:

In any case, if you want to sell physical copies of your artwork you will need to secure a reliable means of producing copies of your work. You can either invest in a fairly expensive printer for your home, or send your files to a reprographics company to have them be printed for you. This option allows you to print at larger scales and you may be able to print on a larger variety of media, such as prepared artist canvas or T-shirts. Ensure you are using archival inks and the printer is capable of of producing results that satisfy your artistic eye a the eye of your customers.
Thank you comment icon Hi Anthony! Can you give some more detail about the resource you're suggesting? Also, are there any other resources you can suggest that are free and have wide accessibility? Sharyn Grose, Admin
