help me choose?

I'm a sophomore in high school and I cant seem to pick a career, I love the outdoors and like hands on work I also enjoy helping people but I love baking and cooking and I'm good at it. there are so many options but I cant pick, park ranger, environmental technician, forestry, cook, Baker, doctor, anesthesiologist, I would go the med school but I don't want to spend half my life in school I want to make money and be financially stable unlike my family. I don't know if I should do something I enjoy with little pay or get a job that make lots of money but not enjoy it

Thank you comment icon I think you should do bakeing. You will get lots of money and I hear you are good at it. You could even open a bakeing store! Simon

I told my guidance counselor in high school that I also loved baking and cooking. She replied with: "Me, too!" Then she asked if I had considered keeping baking/cooking as a hobby. Her point was not all of your interests have to become your job. And for me, she was right. Personally, I didn't want to start my workday at 2am to make croissants. Instead, I prefer working a 9-5 and having time for all my other interests. Have I actually tried waking up at 2am to make croissants? No. It's possible that I could love it. The truth is, you can't know what you don't like until you try it. But for most people, they don't have the time, money, or connections to try out different jobs until they figure out what they like best.

What you can do is:
- Talk to people in those fields and understand what their jobs entail. Reach out to park rangers, environmental technicians, doctors, etc. and learn about why they chose that field and what advice they have for you.
- Check out if your school holds a career fair and use that to gather more information and connect with professionals.
- If you're attending college, connect with your professors, visit your academic advisor and career center, and find internships/shadow people/part-time jobs to get a glimpse into a life in that field.

Medical school is something you have to be 100% certain about. Anesthesiology especially is a competitive field. I know an anesthesiology resident (35 yrs old), who is frugal and lives with his parents. Nothing wrong with that. He's worked hard. In a few years he will make a lot of money, and to him, it's worth it, but not for everyone.

Finally, trust your gut. You do not have to have it all figured out right now. But pursuing what interests you can never be the wrong choice. If you try something and don't like it, that's fine. Accept and embrace that life is not meant to be linear; it's full of steps forwards, backwards, and sideways, which is not time wasted but redirection and a step closer to what's right for you.

You have picked an excellent time to start career exploration. While you consider your options, look at considering earning college credits while in high school. Find out if you school offers dual credit or AP classes. Take as many has you can and save large amounts of time and money. The career exploration advice given above is a good start and I dont have much more to add that hasnt been said. Ask alot of questions to people you know in those fields that interest you. Knowing someone in a career field you are interested in is a great start. Good luck, you will do well.
