I am some one perusing an education in exercise science and plan to do further schooling and become a physical therapist. Are there any known PT facilities that offer good internships for the summer? Additionally, I am currently getting my personal training certification and was wondering if there are any tips for doing personal training along with managing time with school? #Spring25

I live in Nashville TN and went to Hume-Fogg high school. I played softball at Cumberland University for 3 semesters and am now transferring to UTC as a second semester sophomore. Ive been to Elite Physiotherapy and Results Physiotherapy for injuries in the past.

Hi Emma,

While I'm not a PT, I have done some research that might help. Hopefully, someone in the field will chime in soon!

1. I think a great place to start your internship search is to contact the places you've been a patient and see if you can volunteer or intern with them. This would provide a great opportunity to see the inner workings of a place you already know well. If they are not open to interns/volunteers, perhaps they would allow you to shadow a PT.

2. Often times, professors will have great connections. If you have a professor that you have an established connection with, or even if you don't, try reaching out and asking if they know of any opportunities. Because they would be referring you to an internship, it might also increase your chances of being accepted into a program!

3. Someone in a different thread (link: https://www.careervillage.org/questions/538879/how-can-i-gain-experience-towards-becoming-a-physical-therapist) mentioned contacting nursing homes as they usually have higher needs for PTs and would be more willing to accept interns or volunteers.

4. Another Professional in this thread (link: https://www.careervillage.org/questions/932821/how-do-i-get-involved-with-the-physical-therapy-route) mentioned finding a job as a PT Tech. Normally, these folks do not need a degree or any formal training but work closely with PTs. It may give you even more hands on experience than an internship would!
