How do I know that I'm going into the right career path?

I'm a high school senior going into music. I'm majoring in piano, minoring in violin, getting a master's in conducting, and a DMA to become a music professor. In such an uncertain and ever-changing field, how can I be sure that this is the right thing?

Don't stress too much about figuring everything out right now. You're young and have plenty of chances to change direction. Most people don't follow a straight line in their careers. If music is what you love, there are lots of exciting ways to be involved in it, and you'll find them as you gain more experience. You're getting a strong foundation in music, which is fantastic. Keep checking in with yourself about how you feel. If you try something and it doesn't feel right after a while, you can always explore new paths. While you're in school, take advantage of the chance to try different things. That's one of the best parts of college life.

Embrace the joy of learning, as it will be a valuable skill that helps you adapt and grow in your career.

Von’s Answer

If you eat, sleep, and breathe it, there’s a possibility it’s the right path. You have a have a passion and determination in your heart that the other careers don’t matter. Not the money, not the accolades, or anything thing else that comes along with them. You should definitely know that you were born for whatever the career is and that the career space will not be right if you are not in it. That there will be a void that only you (and whatever God put in your heart to bring to the table) can fill. You have to believe that it’s apart of your purpose, and your why for being. If any of this resonates with you there is a big chance that it’s the right career path. Go for it and do not give up.

Amy’s Answer

Hi! When I was in high school I knew I wanted to be a music teacher and went to school for music education. After graduating I applied for teaching jobs, substitute taught, and gave private lessons. After two years of not finding a teaching job in the area I wanted to live in I decided to get my masters in flute performance with the idea of going on for my Doctorate and teaching at the collegiate level. Fifteen years later, different opportunities in life and my career came my way and now I'm still involved with the arts and music, but in a different capacity than as my full time job. It's great to have a plan to work toward, but remember that it's also important to evaluate what means most to you vs. following a strict path.

Dr’s Answer

I remember feeling the pressure of choosing a major when starting college. The truth is, your interests will likely change over time, so try not to stress too much right now. Pick something that sounds good to you and that you enjoy learning about. Stay open to the idea of changing careers later based on new opportunities and interests that you can't predict right now. It's okay if you're not sure if you're on the right path. Just focus on what feels right for you at the moment. Unless you have a Magic 8-Ball that actually works, following your current interests is all you can do at this point. Good luck!

Daniela’s Answer

Hi Zoe, don’t stress too much about finding the “right” career path. As others have mentioned in the comments, most careers evolve over time, influenced by factors we can’t control (like the economy, technological changes, or even pandemics). Stay determined, open-minded, adaptable, and curious as you continue your music career, and seek advice from others in your industry along the way.
