What parts of being a Human Resource Manager are the most rewarding?

I am going to college this fall for business management and marketing, but I am focusing on Human Resource Management. I was wondering what parts of the job you can use to do the most for your community and workplace to help. When I go into a career, I want it to be something I can use to better the world around me, and I think that HR Management could do that.

One of the most rewarding parts of working in HR is the ability to influence and shape the employee experience in a meaningful way. HR plays a big role in building a positive workplace culture, supporting employee wellbeing, and helping people grow in their careers. You could do anything from onboarding where you get to help new employees feel welcomed, supported, and set up for success, or in talent development, where you get to guide people through their career journey.

What I love most is being able to connect employees with one another, create opportunities for meaningful conversations around important topics, and help build a culture where everyone feels they belong and can bring their full selves to work. HR gives you a platform to advocate for people, influence policies that make work more inclusive and equitable, and build programs that help individuals and teams thrive. It’s a career that truly allows you to make a difference in both your workplace and your community.

There are a few things!

1. Impact on individual's career development and growth. For example, in my career I've been able to support leaders or team members find new roles they are interested or build the skills to get bigger or new roles. It brings me a lot of joy to see how my advice, coaching or encouragement helps people in their professional journey.
2. Building organisational programs. Similar to the first one, we have the opportunity to design or implement initiatives that improve our team member's experiences at work and so its rewarding to see the impact of these for lots of people and large teams. For example: rolling out leadership training or new employee benefits or development programs and seeing people really use them and grow.

I love advocating for our team members and seeing that the work I do makes a difference.

I have found being in HR to be very rewarding because you have the opportunity to have a meaningful impact at both an individual level and company wide level. I have found that sometimes individuals turn to you with challenging topics they don't feel comfortable going to their manager or others with and you're able to help them navigate a challenging situation or support them in making an important career decision. When implementing some overall people-centered policies and programs, you have the ability to have an impact on larger groups of people to have a more positive experience at your organization.

Additionally, in terms of impacting the world around you, the skills you develop as an HR professional can be helpful in many ways to those around you. For example, I've volunteered with non-profits who don't always have a dedicated HR professional with that level of expertise and I've been able to help give them things to consider ensure they navigate situations in an appropriate way.

A career in Human Resources can be very rewarding because it's all about helping people. I love coaching others and helping them reach their full potential. To do this well, you need to be a good listener, understand others, and show empathy. People want to feel heard, so listening is just as important as giving advice.

I love this question! It sounds like you truly want to help people around you and HR is one of the best ways to do that. I have worked in all different areas of HR and found all of them rewarding. In talent management, you are helping people get their dream jobs. In compensation, you are working for your employees to get fair and equitable pay. In rewards and recognition, you are helping reward people for their service and motivating them to succeed. In benefits, you are supporting your employees in understanding their benefits and how to best use them to their advantage. In learning and development, you can help people meet their career goals and reach desired levels. In wellness and workplace culture, you are helping them use the available tools to take care of themselves and their families. These are just some of the ways, but know that anything you choose in HR will give you the opportunity to make a difference!

Additional, you get to partner with leaders to help them create and drive meaningful change within their teams and across an organization. As an HR manager, you often become a sound board - a 'first stop' - where people can share ideas and concerns. I'm not in a traditional HR role but I do Human Capital Consulting. I love being able to partner with my clients in HR functions or across other business functions (e.g. finance/supply chain) to curate and maximize the employee experience to drive business and overall organization success. I help clients to figure out how to transform their organization and their workforce from change management to building new skills to defining the organization structure to building the company culture to create the best organization and workforce experience. I've really loved the impact i've been able to make on my clients and their employees.

You get to help people acquire new skills, overcome professional challenges, and reach their full potential. Hi! The part I love the most about working in HR is being able to help others navigate through situations - it can be the leaders I'm advising or the individuals that are struggling with something. You can see how talking with someone - listening to what is on their mind, what challenges they're facing - can really make a difference. I regularly hear, after talking with someone, that the conversation felt a little like a therapy session - just the opportunity to share what's on their mind and talk it over with someone who can be neutral can be really helpful. And to then see change happen and help them is really amazing!

I work as a Benefits Manager and completely agree that working in HR is a career that can be very rewarding and impactful. In my role, I get to help shape the benefit strategy for the company, making sure that we are providing benefits that are the most important to our employees. Hello Elizabeth! Working in HR is a career where you can truly make a difference in the community and support many team members you meet. I've been in HR for almost 20 years. I started in recruiting, and it was very rewarding to help job seekers find roles that offered growth and new opportunities. When I moved into Talent Management, focusing on leadership development, it was exciting to watch team members grow and gain skills to advance in their careers. Seeing them become great leaders and handle challenges well made me feel like my work truly impacted their lives and their teams. Now, as an HR Business Partner, I get to combine all parts of HR. We work closely with the business to tackle challenges and find solutions, which helps both team members and the company improve. HR has allowed me to explore many areas of business, kept me learning, and introduced me to amazing people who have also impacted me positively. It's hard to imagine doing anything else. Even during tough times, like terminations or layoffs, I take pride in treating everyone with respect and dignity. Good luck with your career!
