Juanita’s Answer

Go to the small businesses in your area and present what you are doing to them. You can then create marketing videos for them about their products that they can use and post and all you want in return for your time is a letter of recommendation that you can add to your portfolio. Ensure that you still have all the rights to the marketing material because you can then add the material and the recommendation letters to your portfolio that you can use to show other companies that you are knowledgeable and you can do what they expect.

Steve’s Answer

Start creating your own video content about the products and services you love. If you can connect with people who can give you a chance, that's great! If not, take the initiative to start something fresh on your own. You might not always align perfectly with a company's goals, but you'll gain so much knowledge and experience along the way. Have fun, get inspired by amazing work from others, and leave your unique mark in ways you never imagined possible.

Enjoy every moment of the journey!

Linda’s Answer

Start with checking with your school to see if there are any production or art club that you can join or maybe look to start one. Is there a school year book club that you could join and participate to work with other students to create connect. Build on your video skills and look for opportunities again in your school or around your community where you can volunteer your time to help with creating video content - these experiences will add to your professional skills and will help you to build a wonderful portfolio to showcase your creative work. As you start on this, you will make new connections that will lead to new opportunities. Best of luck!

Steve’s Answer

Start by making short videos or concept ads for real or imaginary brands. Pick products you like and make 15–60 second video or static ads like you’d see on Instagram, TikTok, or YouTube. Focus on storytelling, editing, and capturing attention fast.

What people care about most in your portfolio is they can see you're able to deliver good content and explain the design process of how you got there. Not everyone is going to have A-list client experience (especially at your age), but show you can deliver for A-list clients.

Wish you the best!

1. Learn the Basics

Study Marketing Fundamentals: Understand basic marketing principles—target audience, messaging, branding, and call-to-action.
Explore Video Production: Learn about storyboarding, filming, editing, and sound design. Free resources like YouTube, Coursera, or Khan Academy can help.

2. Get Hands-On Experience

Create Sample Projects: Start with simple projects—advertise a school club, a local event, or a fictional product.
Volunteer: Offer to make promotional videos for school events, local nonprofits, or small businesses. This provides real-world experience and content for your portfolio.

3. Develop Technical Skills

Learn Editing Software: Get comfortable with tools like iMovie, Adobe Premiere Rush, or DaVinci Resolve (many have free versions).
Experiment with Different Styles: Try explainer videos, testimonials, product demos, or social media ads to showcase versatility.

4. Showcase Results

Track Engagement: If possible, measure views, likes, shares, or feedback on your videos to demonstrate impact.
Include Before/After Examples: Show how your video improved awareness or engagement for a project.

5. Build an Online Portfolio

Use Free Platforms: Create a simple website using Wix, WordPress, or Google Sites.
Organize Your Work: For each project, include:

The video itself (hosted on YouTube or Vimeo)
A brief description (objective, target audience, your role)
Any results or feedback

6. Network and Get Feedback

Share Your Work: Post videos on LinkedIn, Instagram, or TikTok to reach a wider audience.
Ask for Feedback: Seek input from teachers, local business owners, or online communities to improve your skills.

7. Keep Learning and Updating

Stay Current: Follow trends in video marketing—short-form content, storytelling, influencer marketing, etc.
Update Portfolio Regularly: Replace older work with new, higher-quality projects as your skills improve.

Example Portfolio Outline

Introduction: Short bio and your interest in video marketing.
Project 1: School club promo video (goal, process, outcome)
Project 2: Local business ad (goal, process, outcome)
Project 3: Social media campaign (goal, process, outcome)
Contact Information

Final Tips

Quality Over Quantity: A few strong projects are better than many average ones.
Be Authentic: Show your creative style and what makes your approach unique.
Document Your Process: Behind-the-scenes photos or explanations add depth to your portfolio.

Try to DO as much as possible. You will learn so much by digging in. See if you can offer your services for free at first. Then build up your experience, and start to charge. Doing will always teach you so much faster than any online courses. It is the best way to build your skills!
