How can I best prepare to compete four years from now when AI is moving so fast today?

As a high school senior entering college in the Fall of 2025 with a degree in Business Management, I am concerned that the speed of change AI will bring to certain business careers could make some degrees obsolete by the time I graduate. It does appear that data analytics courses could be one path. #Spring25

Learning how to use AI well will matter, and I’d definitely encourage you to build comfort with data, analytics, and AI tools while you’re in college. But I wouldn’t focus only on technical skills. As AI gets better at doing tasks, the things that stay valuable are very human ones: how you think through messy problems, how you communicate, how you work with others, and how you make good judgments when there isn’t a clear answer.

My advice is to use college to do both: learn how AI works and how it can help you, and invest in developing your critical thinking, writing, and leadership skills. The tools will keep changing, but those abilities tend to last, and they’ll help you adapt no matter how fast things move.

AI is transforming the way work is done and the skills that are required for people to know how to leverage AI and be able to be more strategic in their roles rather than completely eliminating all of the business roles. Knowing how to use the AI tools but also knowing how to leverage what AI is giving you to carve out more time to be strategic, and combine what AI is able to give you with what expertise you can bring will maximize your role as you enter the workforce.

That's a fantastic question! This week, a colleague and I discussed this very topic. We both have kids in college and years of experience in consulting. In high school and college, you might notice that some professors ban AI for writing papers. We were debating whether this is a good idea.
