I am a first year design student at Iowa State University and planning on getting into the Architecture program. What could I do over the summer (while maintaining a part-time job) to better my chances of getting an internship during or after first year as an Architecture undergraduate?

Hey Alayna! Leo’s advice is spot on. The AIA Iowa is a very active chapter and it’s a great place to meet with professionals in the industry. They have loads of events throughout the year and it will give you the opportunity to network with various people. Regardless of how small the event is, if it fits in your schedule, and engage with the attendees. You would be surprised how supportive most people will be. The Iowa Women in Architecture also has events throughout the summer. Best part, most of these events are usually free for students! That’s how I got my first internship :) As a fellow cyclone, I wish you the best!!

Hi Alayna! I’d suggest focusing on developing a strong portfolio, networking, and seeking out internships opportunities. Build a portfolio that showcases your best design work, including 2D drawings, 3D renders, and architectural details. Network with professors, classmates, and industry professionals to learn about potential internship openings and gain recommendations. Also remember to use your university career services, online platforms like LinkedIn, and industry events to discover internships. Hope this helps!
