Rahean, congratulations on becoming a college student-athlete! You've clearly put in a lot of hard work to reach this point. Sports Management covers a wide range of areas, and many people are involved in managing athletes. To succeed, it's important to understand the competitive and tough nature of this field. If you haven't done so yet, consider reading "Hot Dog Money" by Guy Larson. This book offers insights into the industry, covering managers, agents, financial planners, and investors. It could give you a valuable advantage.

Hello Rahean,
This answer doesn't really apply to courses to take, but does apply to an experience you can have during college that could help with your overall goal. As you aspire to be a professional basketball player, I'm going to guess that you will be playing basketball at South Carolina State University. If this is the case, you have access a a bunch of experts who can advise you about Sports Management and which courses to take to focus your Business Administration studies.

I encourage you to spend some time with the coaches and management team at your college to learn what it is they do and how they came to be in that position. A friend of mine was a Operations Manager for a PAC 10 football team when I met him (That's when there was a PAC 10). But, he played football in college. Then went on to be a high school sports coach. Moved into coaching at the college level and eventually focused in Operations and worked both at the college level and for some NFL teams. A lot of his ability to grow his career was based on the contacts he made when he was playing football in college. And now, since he's coached so many college athletes that went on to the NFL and he's interacted with so many NFL management teams on behalf of his college athletes, he can always get tickets to the Superbowl when he wants to go.

Anyway, back to your question. Talk to your coaching team to see what advice they have. While they are there to make sure you are doing a great job as an athlete, they are also invested in your academic success. And, they can likely introduce you to people in the world of professional basketball.

If my assumption that you will be playing basketball for your college is incorrect, I encourage you to look for jobs with one of the school's sports teams. Colleges with sports teams often hire students to do jobs for the team. This would be an opportunity for you to meet people who do things in Sports Management within the college and offer you the opportunity to learn from them.

Good luck!

To really succeed in Sports Management, doing a hands-on internship is a great move. Many schools offer this chance as you go through your studies, and trust me, an internship is super helpful. If you love basketball but aren't on the team, think about being a manager or a practice player. This real-world experience is a fantastic way to learn how to create a winning team from the inside.
