When you start up joining an engineering school , you have one goal -lead good life ,earn fat paycheck right out of school and also dream of immensely successful from word go. In this hot race ,you forget to enjoy the job or profession and it becomes monotonous as a ritual and struggle .

But If you give your self time and remember Rome was not built in day ,you will be equipped with the tools to become what you really aspire to become ,

I learnt slowly sharing time between personal and professional routines .But now that I have done ,life has been peaceful

Good karma and stay Safe

I was pleasantly surprised about how varied the engineering field was - I am an Aerospace Engineer and now work in the medical device field. They are so many opportunities that come from starting as an engineer that you can continue to grow and learn new things in the field and branch out from core technical things to other areas like program/project management and leadership while continuing to leverage your technical/engineer skill set.

I am in the telecom engineering field for over 30 years.  i think the thing that is different - and not as desirable - is the instability of the industry.  Telecom has lots of layoffs. mergers, and reorganizations and that is unsettling career-wise .   As an engineer you think you may be "invaluable",  but today's business environment that is not always the case.  Even good engineers get laid off.  Not that I would change my career choice at all.  I love what I do and am good at it, but companies are not the same as they used to be regarding loyalty to employees and that has been different than I expected when I graduated.

My suggest is to keep current.  Never stop learning.  Show companies the value you offer them.  Don't get too specific or tied to one technology, because it changes too quickly (ask those "Novell CNE engineers" how much need is there for there expertise... Keep an open mind to change - both good and bad.   And plan that industry will force you to leave your career before you likely feel you are ready.
