How should I start planning for college as a sophomore in high school?

I currently live in the Bahamas. I would like to become a pharmacist and get my doctorate degree as well.

The field of pharmacy has changed dramatically over the years. I have been a pharmacist for over 20 years, and even though I love what I do, I would not advise the future generation to go into pharmacy. I say that because now you have to do at least 2 residencies to be competitive. Plus there are so many pharmacy schools now, that the market is overly saturated. To get a job you may have to move to the out skirts where no one wants to be. I would seriously reconsider your path. But don't take my word for it. Research the profession. Speak to other pharmacists. I would look into becoming a PA or nurse practitioner. Less time in school, better pay, and they are in demand. If you really want job security, look into the mental health profession. Hope this helps. Wish you the best.

Good Day Raelynn!

Yes, timely preparation. Take appropriate high school prerequisite subjects. That will mean some forethought of what you want to major in. Since that is a doctorate in Pharmacy, take prerequisite subjects like Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics as a preparation in high school. Possibly you can do anatomy, biology, biochemistry, chemistry, and pharmacology in an undergraduate degree. The Pharmacology Doctorate would be best completed in the US. An example is Johns Hopkins.

Take as many science classes as you can. Volunteer in different pharmacy settings (retail, hospital) to get a sense of whether this is the right career for you. Also visit pharmacy schools to get familiar with their admission requirements. You may even get a scholarship from one of the schools if you express interest
