What is a good college program for pediatric nursing in san diego?

I am looking for a good college that has a nursing program that fits my field.

Hey Van,
I'm not from San Diego but I would recommend starting in a community college for your pre-requisites like: Psychology, Sociology, etc.. The cost is lower and these will transfer to university. A guidance counselor would be able to narrow down your choices in San Diego. If you google top nursing schools in San Diego, you will see what colleges and universities rank highest and for what reasons. I hope this helps Van.

Hi Van,

I've worked with nurses in a variety of settings but I am not a nurse. That being said, I will try to offer some guidance based on what I've reviewed in the local colleges and what PED nurses need to get started.

The University of San Diego (USD) Hahn School of Nursing is the top choice if you want to be a pediatric nurse or nurse practitioner. It has strong national rankings, personal faculty support, and excellent clinical prep. Students rave about their individual attention and career advancement. This program is challenging and competitive. So, keep that in mind.

San Diego State University (SDSU) offers a large campus with solid nursing and child development options, including hands-on childcare centers. Students like the mentorship and clinical placements. But, you are now in the larger university setting so it may feel that the interactions with faculty is not as personalized. You will have to seek it out. Professors in child development are considered as caring and passionate.

A few other options...

San Diego Mesa, City, and Miramar Colleges are great community college options for starting a pediatric or child development career. They are more affordable, provide practical hands-on experience in nursery and childcare, and have smaller class sizes. Teachers are more approachable and they provide active student support, with strong pathways to transfer to four-year universities if desired.

Hi Van,

San Diego State University has an excellent nursing program. Rady Children's Hospital in San Diego has a residency program for new graduates of the nursing program that prepares you for pediatric nursing certifications.
