Hello, Hazel !
Based on standard medical ethics and patient rights, teen students would generally not be allowed to observe patient sonograms without explicit patient consent and institutional approval.
I personally do not believe that observing a medical procedure out of curiosity is something that should be done. Since you already know that you'll be going into Sonography as a career choice, it's perfectly fine to wait until you are enrolled for it.
I would suggest if you are curious and eager, watch some videos on the subject, sonograms and ultrasound. I left a link for you below to some videos that show and are informative. My own opinion is that it's a better way to "observe" this as some of it can be very private.
Something else you can do is to register for a tour and orientation of the school you will be going to. That will help you see the department and devices and machines you'd be using. You will not do sonography or ultrasound until you go to the program and become certified. While you are in school, you most likely will have clinicals. Ask the sonography guide during the orientation if these clinicals will be on real patients or Standardized Patient Actors.
To Shadow or Observe during a real Sonogram, it will be extra work for the provider because he or she would have to have every patient agree and sign permission via a HIPAA Form for you to be in the room. Since this is extra work for the provider, it may be difficult and sort of distracting for the provider.
This is just one point of view and I am sure you will have advice to shadow and observe while in high school, so after hearing about it all, make a decision about what you think would be best and easiest for you to learn more about this career while still in high school. I almost forgot to mention, a good idea would be to take some Anatomy classes in high school or online.
I wish you all the best moving forward !
