Hi Sara!

Daniel's answer above is a really good list of steps, because the FAFSA is specifically important for receiving federal need-based aid, and if that's the route you go, you will need to fill it out eventually (unless something has changed). I also remember when I was comparing colleges, I would use these search pages like bigfuture.collegeboard.org and just compare rough numbers of average aid. For students who can attend a public US college within their state, that tends to save the most cost, because if I remember correctly, states work a little harder to get their own residents in and meet their financial needs. Of course, the base tuition before aid is usually much lower for in-state students.

I notice you might be an international student for US colleges, in which case it may also be worth applying to various additional scholarships at schools that have the potential to give you a full-ride (tuition-free) scholarship for academic performance, but do know that these are VERY competitive, so your school achievements, application, and personal story usually have to be fairly impressive to have a chance. Some schools offer these full-ride scholarships, and some external organizations even offer these too. Definitely engage the help of a college counselor if possible, as Daniel also said, because they will know where to look for these much better than I do (and they might have better answers for the rest of these pieces as well). But if you aren't able to find affordable college counseling, try to ask someone who has done this process more recently and ask them what they did.

Hello Sara,

That's a wonderful question! I recently faced a similar situation with my son, who just finished high school.

Here are some helpful steps to get you started:

1. Go to the FAFSA Website: Fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Make sure all your details are accurate to qualify for the best scholarships and financial aid.
2. Look at Other Sites: Check out resources like Fastweb, which offer a wide list of scholarships for extra funding.
3. Talk to a Counselor: Don't forget to reach out to your college or high school counselor. They are experts in guiding students to find options that fit their needs.

Wishing you the best with your applications!

Warm regards,
