Steven’s Answer

Whatever speciality you choose learn it thoroughly and learn such medical areas related to it. Have a backup plan and be flexible. Historically Public Health is characterised by Panic and Neglect. Right now we're in Panic but when the pandemic recedes expect Neglect.

Vanessa’s Answer

There are so many different professions in Public Health: Health promotions (major in suicide prevention, addiction, nutrition, or fitness), emergency preparedness and response (emergency management or emergency preparedness and response) environment health (geology or environmental health), WIC (administration or nutrition), clinc (nurse, nurse practitioner, medical billing), epidemiologist (nurse microbiology) and vital starts (administrative). There is also a degree in public health that covers a little bit of all of this.

Vanessa recommends the following next steps:

Find your passion and go for it.

Nicole’s Answer

Hi Alexandra C. I see that you posted this question a little while ago so I hope my answer to you (or others who may read this response) is still helpful.

As I answer this question, we are in the summer of 2021 as the world is working it's way through a global pandemic. While there is no shortage of areas where public health is important, I would consider finding ways to kill a virus that has ravaged so many communities as in the top 3 of the most important impacts of a strong public health sector. The science around diagnosing a problem that becomes recurring, the growth curve of individuals with a virus, the science around creating and distributing a vaccine...these are just a small sample of the impacts that public health has had across the globe. So for anyone who isn't sure about how good of a major public health is, they have only to look at what has happened globally as a result of COVID-19 to gather their understanding.

I do hope this answer is helpful.

Anh’s Answer

I would always recommend public health because it gives a really different perspective on the healthcare system. I think it's really important for someone who's going to be a physician to have that understanding. And I also think if you're going into the healthcare field in general, depending on the classes that your school might offer. It's really nice to get a broad range of understanding of epidemiology and Biostatistics, environmental Health Sciences, community health, like all of that gives a really good foundation, but I think that is really depends on what your career aspirations might be and the universities program itself.
