Where do I begin? Am I on the right path?

Hello, I am a senior in school who is also working towards an associate in science degree at my local community college. I currently play basketball for my high school, and I am open to playing in the future. While I am in school, I am working towards getting my law degree and one day be able to help people who are in need of law services, and they do not want to go thru legal aid or cannot go thru legal aid.
Here recently I have been looking into going into sports management. Having a background in sports, and wanting to go into law, I was thinking about going into sports management right along the same lines as Jalen Hurts management team. My question is, do you think by continuing with my law degree, after completing it would be an easy transition to sports management? In reading if it would be a difficult transition, I found that they are intertwined with each other because sports law is a collection of legal disciplines like contracts, labor, and intellectual property law.
Going down the path I have chosen, would it be a difficult transition to go from attorney/ lawyer to having a sports management team?

You’re thinking about this the right way, and your path actually makes sense. A background in law can be very complementary to sports management, especially on the business and legal side of sports (contracts, negotiations, compliance, labor issues, and intellectual property). Many people working with athletes, teams, or sports organizations come from legal, business, or management backgrounds rather than purely “sports” degrees.
That said, the transition won’t be automatic—you’ll want to be intentional. While you’re in school, look for internships, part-time roles, or volunteer opportunities related to sports (athletic departments, sports agencies, team operations, or legal clinics tied to sports or contracts). This will help you test whether you enjoy the day-to-day work and build relevant experience. Law school keeps many doors open, and with early exposure to the sports industry, moving into sports management later is very achievable.

Hi Hayden: NC has great Community Colleges - I teach at one. I am a lawyer who, like you, played sports all my life. However, the transition into sports management is a difficult task. Very competitive. I wound up trying cases in NYC for 39 years. Trial work is a lot like sports. Competitive and strategic. Plus fun. Like sports you win or lose.
I'd suggest you get your AA degree and transfer credits to the college of your choice. After college look at Elon Law - offers interesting programs. In law school you'll get a chance to see all the different fields law has to offer. You may want to ditch sports management and go into tax law. Time will tell!
Good luck!

Hi Hayden, great job on thinking this through. Remember, you don't need to have everything figured out right now. I started in community college with a major in paralegal studies and worked in various legal fields. After earning a BS in Criminal Justice, I realized my passion for social justice and wanted to pursue family or social services law. However, law school was expensive, and the financial return wasn't immediate. So, I switched paths and got an MBA in Human Resource Management. My main goal was always to serve people, and even though my path changed, I ended up where I belong. Some careers offer many opportunities, while others are more competitive. Stay focused on your passion for serving the athletic community and be open to where opportunities lead you.
