What HBCU's should I look at for the high quality education in the Aviation field? Should I go to college and flight school or just go to flight school?

My overall carrer goal is to become an airline pilot for airlines like JetBlue or Aircanada, But I also want to go to college to experience an HBCU and the college experience itself. What HBCU's have the highest quality of education in their aviation degree programs. I would like to know so that I can compete for hire when the time comes.

Hi, Bryant !

When looking at HBCUs for Aeronautics programs for a Bachelors Degree, you can explore Hampton University in Virginia, Texas Southern University, Auburn University in Alabama, Florida Memorial College in Miami, and Delaware State University in Dover.

The names of the programs vary from college to college but you will see programs called the following: Flight Education, Aviation Management - Air Traffic Control, and Aviation Management - Airport Administration, Aviation/Aerospace with concentrations in Management, Flight Operations, Security, Aviation Maintenance, Airport Operations, or Unmanned Aerial Systems, and Airway Science. The Bachelors Programs are a path towards careers in aviation, including piloting, air traffic control, and airport administration. Read the programs at the various schools to see which path and curriculum you like best.

Something to keep in mind about HBCUs is that Caucasian and Asian students are not only allowed but are also actively enrolled at HBCUs, contributing to the rich cultural and academic environment of these institutions. The HBCUs were established during a time in history when there was a need to provide education for African American students during a time of widespread racial segregation and discrimination, but they have always been open to students of all races and backgrounds. HBCUs have never enforced racial exclusivity. In fact, from their inception, many HBCUs enrolled white students, including those from poorer backgrounds, as well as Native American and Asian students.

If you possibly could, registering for Orientation/Tours of the campuses would help you decide which college you'd like best. Also look for videos on You Tube about the individual colleges because many colleges have a You Tube Channel.

In order to work for Air Canada, one would need to have Canadian citizenship, permanent resident status, or a valid work permit or visa.

Students pursuing a degree in aeronautics at a university can attend flight school at the same time. It would be up to you as to what you'd want to do, but the Bachelors Degree is going to be very important, so I would advise doing both the Bachelors Degree as well as flight school. You can go to flight school after you obtain your Bachelors Degree if you wanted to, also. That may be better manageable financially, but this is something you will know more about during your Aeronautics program. It may be too soon to plan this now before knowing more about your specific college and the actual program.

Remember to apply for Scholarships for college. You can find scholarships on line that are in different categories such as major, need based, merit and the college you choose to attend will haves scholarships for their students. Find Scholarship Websites by doing an online search. Also apply for Federal Student Financial Aid.

Try not to plan the career too much with specifics of which company you want to work for. You will want to start working after you get your Bachelors Degree and your pilots' license and employment listings will indicate which companies are hiring at that time. You will learn how to start your career during your academic path as well as during flight school so no need to pre-plan that far ahead just yet. You will do your paths based on your circumstances and preferences being better informed through college and training from flight school.

I hope this helps and I wish you all the best for this wonderful career !
