A good start if you are undecided in your major is a community college. At this level, you are able to stay productive and complete your prerequisites, while still taking time to think over what you would want to major in. During this time you really want to get involved in different things to see what you really want to do. Talking to people within the field/fields you are interested in, exploring possible career opportunities, and job shadowing are all things you can do in order to better understand what you want to do with your life. If you find a particular job you want to do, you can choose the major from there. If you find a certain area of interest, you can choose that and look at the specific jobs within that field.

At most colleges and universities, you are able to go in undecided and usually declare a major sometime during your freshman year. I would recommend using all resources that your school has available such as academic advisors and career services. The staff within these departments should help guide you in the right direction in helping you declare a major.

If you start at a community college and you discover during that time what you want to study, you can then choose an university based on your major. If you have a specific school you want to go to but are still undecided, I would make sure they at least have a good selection of programs or have degrees with what you are interested in.

If you are undecided I would highly recommend holding off on college. Not only is college is very expensive, but it is not about trying to find out what you want to do with your career. College is about learning the skills needed to start and have a successful career to earn a living.

I would also recommend not focusing solely on college. There a large number of trades, like electricians, that start with a paid apprenticeships and on the job training. These fields are always in demand and pay very well.

If you are completely unsure of what you want to do try a liberal arts college. They have a wide variety of majors, so that should you make a decision you are at a school that provides that option rather than being stuck in a position where you have to transfer.
