Fashion Business and a Dance Career?

I hope to study for a fashion marketing undergraduate degree in Tokyo, Shanghai, Seoul, Paris, New York City, or London. However, in addition to my fashion marketing degree, I also want to pursue a career in hip-hop dance, almost as a side gig. Do any of the cities I listed fit my preferences? Do any of them have a solid reputation in fashion marketing and hip-hop dance? I would like some insight from both careers' perspectives on any of the cities.

Look into the top 2-3 places and gather information on which offers the best internship programs. Check if the internships are paid and whether language might be a barrier. Nehad Tadros

Hi Haruka, your passion for the arts is truly inspiring. I was once in your shoes, juggling different interests, and I can tell you that New York and Seoul are fantastic choices. Both cities have vibrant dance and fashion scenes. When I lived in New York, I worked in IT by day and spent my nights and weekends dancing at Broadway Dance Center. Your interests in dance and fashion naturally go hand in hand. Connecting with others in the entertainment industry can open doors to styling opportunities and help you build a strong portfolio.

Though I eventually left New York to focus on family and taught dance aerobics on the side, many of my friends went on to become choreographers or moved into hip-hop fashion. I have firsthand experience with New York's entertainment scene, and my daughter attended FIT. Her network there was amazing, leading her to work with designers like All Saints, Sean John, and Michael Kors. She also styled many performers and helped cast models and dancers for live and video performances, thanks to her connections in fashion.

I share all this to show you that your dreams are within reach, and your interests will complement each other. Do your research, choose a place where you feel comfortable, but don't be afraid to challenge yourself. My daughter worked in her field, and her employers even sent her abroad for shows and marketing experience. You can achieve great things, too!

I agree with your points, especially about how important location is when trying to balance both academics and personal passions. Cities like New York really stand out because they allow students to gain hands-on experience through internships while also staying connected to creative outlets like hip-hop dance. I also like that you mentioned Seoul, because it shows how global fashion and dance culture have become, not just limited to Western cities. I think your advice about considering language barriers and industry connections is realistic and helpful for students who might get excited about studying abroad without thinking through the challenges. Overall, choosing a city that supports both career goals and creative growth makes a lot of sense and would help students stay motivated and well-rounded.

That’s a great combination of interests! Cities like New York, Paris, and London are strong for fashion marketing because of global brands, internships, and networking opportunities. For hip-hop dance, New York and Seoul have very active street dance communities, studios, and performance spaces where you can grow even while studying. Tokyo and Shanghai also have creative fashion scenes, but you may want to research language requirements and industry connections. If possible, choose a city where fashion internships are accessible and dance studios are easy to join, that balance will make managing both passions much easier.
