Hi Traevon, During your clinical rotations, you will get a good idea of what specialties of nursing that you are interested in. For me, it became very clear where my interest was. Some not so obvious nursing specialties include procedural nursing, a few include; cardiac cath lab, endoscopy nursing, radiologic procedural nursing, specialties in surgery. There is clinical research nursing, industrial safety nursing, corporate health clinic nursing, nurse consultants for insurance, home health nurses, wound care nurses, patient specialty health education RNs...Nurses sell pharmaceuticals, consult for various health related fields, train medical staff in CPR or medical equipment or procedures... the list is almost endless. Go be your best self as a nursing student. Enjoy the things you get to experience during clinicals and the knowledge you are going to obtain. In my experience, hospitals are open to nursing staff shadowing specialties they are curious about. You will have plenty of chances to find the nursing role that fits your lifestyle upon graduation and move into other nursing specialties as your career and personal life progresses and changes. There will endless choices for you if and when you are ready for your next opportunity. Good luck.

Hello! Good for you; for looking ahead to your career choices! First of all, with all kindness and caring, I suggest you work on your spelling and word usage. You used the word “their” instead of the correct word, “there.” I may sound like I am nit-picking, but this is crucial to being viewed as a professional. So, take those “boring” English classes seriously! To find your niche in Nursing, think about what population(s) you would like to work with: Infants? Children? Seniors? Would you enjoy interacting closely with patients and families, as in bedside Nursing, or would you prefer a specialty with less patient interaction, such as OR? Do you like technology, as you would encounter in Critical Care, for example? How about the fast-paced, anything-can-happen ED setting? Regardless of your ultimate specialty choice, I always advise new grads to “get their feet wet” in a Med-Surg setting before branching out. These are just a few things to consider. I wish you all the best.
