What are the steps to getting a bachelor's degree in zoology as an aspiring Wildlife Biologist who is currently a senior in high school? who also plans on attending a four-year university ?
Hello! I am currently a senior in high school attending Clairemont High in San Diego California. I am an aspiring wildlife Biologist who plans on attending a four year university and majoring in zoology. I love volunteering, hiking, learning about animals, animal conservation, and tidepooling!

Hi Evangeline,
The steps to get your degree is going to depend on the school you end up attending because each school has similar but different criteria. You can quickly find yours by Googling "your university name + zoology requirements" and it should give you something like this page from SDSU (https://catalog.sdsu.edu/preview_program.php?catoid=11&poid=11833)
Some important things to note:
- Try to get as much experience (internships, volunteering, jobs, research) as you can while in undergrad so that you can set yourself up for success for finding a job post-graduation. This will also help you expand your network and connections. One good place to start is by volunteering with the CA Department of Fish & Wildlife (https://wildlife.ca.gov/Volunteering/NRVP).
- Often times, you will need a Master's degree. I'd recommend doing a little bit of research and seeing what careers in zoology interest you. From there, you can see what they require and you can base your path around that. For instance, if you find the many of the jobs that you like involve getting your PhD, that is something you should plan for.
