What steps can I take during flight training to make myself a strong candidate for an airline pilot career in the future?

I’m 22 and preparing to begin full-time flight training this summer with the goal of becoming a professional airline pilot. I have already completed my FAA First Class Medical and a discovery flight, and I’m planning to attend a structured flight training program. I’m highly motivated and ready to put in the work, but I’m still at the very beginning of this path and would appreciate advice on how to make the most of my training and stand out as I progress.

Hi Josephine!

My advice is to complete your written exams as soon as you can to get yourself ahead! Complete the online ground school for your private pilot course and schedule the written exam! Some online ground school courses I recommend are Sportys or FlightInsight. Don't be afraid to ask your assigned instructor questions, and when at home, practice chair flying some of the maneuvers you'll be taught.

Hope that helps!

Hi,
Sounds like you have done the right things by getting your medical and taking a discovery flight. You sound very motivated which is awesome!

Do you have a college degree? Where are you looking to flight train and how often?

I'm happy to help as I am a mentor and also mentor new hires at my airline.

Wishing you the best of luck!
Stephanie
Thank you comment icon Hi Stephanie, Thank you so much for your response and encouragement, it really means a lot. I do not currently have a college degree, but I do plan to work toward one while instructing and building hours in the future. My focus right now is on beginning full-time flight training. I’ve been accepted to Epic Flight Academy in Utah and will be relocating there in the next couple of weeks to begin training this summer. I’ve been working steadily while saving toward this goal, and although funding has been the biggest challenge, I’m very committed and ready to work hard for it. I really appreciate your willingness to help and would genuinely love any advice you have. Thank you again! Best, Josie Josephine
