How do I get refferals for Co-Ops and Internships I'm applying for?
What’s the best way for students to get referrals for co‑ops or internships? I’m trying to understand how the process usually works and what steps actually make a difference. I've already completed one Co-Op as a financial analyst at TJX, but did that without referrals or networking. Any advice from people who’ve been on either side of the referral process would be really helpful.

What has worked for me and others is:
- Build connections before you need a referral.
- Attend networking events, career fairs, and employer info sessions.
- Connect with alumni and employees on LinkedIn.
- Have a polished resume ready when someone offers to help.
- Ask for insights about the role first, not just a referral.
Also, don't underestimate the value of applying without a referral. You've already landed a co-op at TJX through your own qualifications, which shows that a strong resume, relevant experience, and interview preparation can be just as important as networking. A referral helps get your resume noticed, but your skills and experience are what ultimately get you the offer.

1. Start with LinkedIn to find people in the industry you're interested in. See if you have mutual connections with them.
2. Maintain good relationships with your current and former teachers. They are often well-connected and might have useful advice or leads.
3. Attend career fairs to talk to companies, learn about their job openings, and make friends with recruiters.
4. Visit your school's career services or your department's office to find out which companies they work with that might need new hires.
These efforts might not pay off immediately. Remember, this process takes time. Focus on making a name for yourself as someone seeking opportunities.
I hope this helps!
