Cyber Security is a broad category of disciplines you can study that each focuses on protecting computer systems, software, data, and users from harm. What specific area of cyber security you go into depends on what aspect of that appeals to you. Defending computer hardware includes knowing about the electronics and system architecture, thinking about how they may be vulnerable to attack and then how to design them to be able to resistant to those attacks. Similarly, software security does the same for the (massive number of) common vulnerabilities that exist in the world's collection of software systems, to protect against exploit by hackers.
Studying this could put you in the role of someone who investigates systems to find weaknesses that can be exploited, or one who finds new and better methods to build stronger software, or both.
Security also includes protecting systems and data from things that aren't malicious as well, such as natural disasters, human errors, and the like.
Looking at online conference materials from various BSIDES conferences is a good starting point because they are specifically geared for beginners in the community, as well as other online resources such as owasp.org, etc.

Cybersecurity covers many different roles. It involves keeping systems, networks, programs, devices, and data safe from digital attacks, unauthorized access, theft, or damage. Some jobs in this field include Network Security, Application Security, Information and Data Security, Operations and Cloud Security, and Identity and Access Management.

Jason’s Answer
Cybersecurity is the practice of protecting digital systems from ill-intentioned (or simply misguided) actors. The goal is to keep the systems safe, functioning properly, and to safeguard private data.

Cybersecurity is the practice of protecting systems, networks, and programs from digital attacks. These cyberattacks are usually aimed at accessing, changing, or destroying sensitive information; extorting money from users through ransomware; or interrupting normal business processes.
Implementing effective cybersecurity measures is particularly challenging today because there are more devices than people, and attackers are becoming more innovative.
A successful cybersecurity posture has multiple layers of protection spread across the computers, networks, programs, or data that one intends to keep safe. In an organization, a unified threat management gateway system can automate integrations across products and accelerate key security operations functions: detection, investigation, and remediation. People, processes, and technology must all complement one another to create an effective defense from cyberattacks.
