Chinyere’s Answer

Hi Ehimare,

As a 200-level Psychology student in Nigeria, you’re at a good point to start thinking beyond individual courses and consider the areas of psychology you may eventually want to work in. The exact course titles will vary by university, so your departmental handbook should be your first reference. Your university’s approved curriculum will tell you exactly what you’re expected to take.

At this stage, you’ll normally encounter courses such as Developmental Psychology, Social Psychology, Cognitive Psychology, Personality Psychology, Abnormal Psychology, Physiological Psychology, Research Methods, Psychological Statistics, and Industrial/Organisational Psychology. You may also study courses connected to counselling, educational psychology, health, or testing and assessment depending on your programme.

You should pay particular attention to Research Methods and Statistics, even if they aren't your favourite subjects. Psychology is a research-based discipline, and being able to understand studies, collect data, analyse results, and evaluate evidence will be useful in almost every psychology career.

Also start noticing which subjects genuinely hold your attention. If you enjoy mental health and helping people, you might explore clinical or counselling psychology. If you enjoy working with organisations and employees, industrial/organisational psychology could be worth exploring. If children and learning interest you, educational or developmental psychology may be a good direction. There are also opportunities in research, health, human resources, social services, academia, and related fields.

Since you're in Nigeria, I'd also recommend checking the current professional and postgraduate requirements for whichever area interests you. A bachelor's degree in Psychology doesn't automatically qualify someone to practise as a specialist psychologist or counsellor. Further education, supervised training, and professional requirements may apply depending on the career you choose.

For now, don't feel pressured to choose a specialization in 200 level. Use your remaining undergraduate years to build strong research skills, gain practical experience, volunteer where appropriate, and talk to professionals working in different psychology-related careers.

Your degree gives you a foundation. The experiences you build alongside it will help determine where that foundation takes you.

Best wishes!

Hetal’s Answer

Hi Ehimare, if you’re interested in Psychology, one option you can explore is a Master of Arts (MA) in Psychology. It can help you build deeper knowledge of human behaviour, mental processes, counselling, and psychological concepts, while opening up different career pathways in the field.

You can explore the MA Psychology program and other university options on UniversityGuru. If you share your current qualification and career goal, I can also guide you on which Psychology course may be suitable for you.

Carol’s Answer

Kisha’s answer was very complete. Any studies on the human behavior is worthwhile. I actually majored in Sociology and found the study of group behavior just as fascinating. Your understanding of human behavior would be of great help to you in whatever you undertake. Wishing you much success.
