First off, so happy you are considering dietetics! It is a wonderful field and, having recieved my bachelor's in nutrition, it is full of people who genuinely want you to succeed. That being said, internships can be quite competitive to get into. If you haven't already enrolled in an ACEND accredited DPD program and/or are looking to use DICAS to apply for dietetic internships, any and all work and volunteering related to nutrition is helpful, especially if in your applications you can highlight your passion. Begin to develop a well-thought out and meaningful answer to the question "why dietetics?" beyond simply wanting to help people. There are many professions in which you can help others without going into nutrition. If financially able, consider becoming a student member of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics to find ways to get involved in policy and networking. If you live in Texas, there is a student dietetic association (TSDA) that is a great way to meet other nutrition students. Find ways to get involved in your community and, if possible, reach out to local dietitians for mentorship or shadowing opportunities. Finally, consider coordinated programs to get both your Masters and 1,200 supervised hours completed. As of 2024, all RDNs will have to have a masters anyways so these types of programs could save you the hassle of using DICAS. Good luck and have fun with it!

Most Hospitals have volunteer programs that provides certificates at the end of the programs. Some also partner with the local school broad to provide work releases for high school students. Once you build a rapport the facility leadership will become more open to writing a letter of recommendation.

Supervised practice in an accredited Dietetic Internship program is required, along with academic coursework, to become a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist. There is a national application process that is made available through the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
Currently there are more applicants than positions available and nationally about 50% of the applicants are placed. It is essential that, beginning early in their dietetics coursework, students plan for developing a strong record of academic progress, experiences and relationships that will support a successful application.
