Do not underestimate the importance of finances. Unless someone else is paying for your education, consider the cost. Attending classes at a community college, choosing a state school, and applying to all scholarships available can minimize cost.

You can't determine the number one question to ask until you make a list of what's most important to you in choosing a college. For some people it will be the major so their question might revolve around how many classes or instructors are available for their intended major. For someone else they may prioritize diversity so they will ask about the make up of the student body in terms of gender, race, etc. Another person may focus on student life so they will ask about the dorms, organizations on campus, meal plans, the surrounding community, etc. So I suggest you decide what's most important to you when deciding which college to attend and then make a list of questions to help with your decision. Good luck!

Hi! There are a lot of colleges to choose from- I know sometimes it can be overwhelming! I remember feeling torn when trying to decide on a school my senior year of high school.

When I decided on a college, I did a lot of touring. If you are able to visit the colleges you are interested in, I think that is the best way to see if the college is a good fit for you! I suggest walking around the campus, looking around at the students, and maybe talking to some people that go there. See if they like it!

It is also helpful to create a list of things you are looking for at a school. Do you want the school to have a football team? Do you want the school to be in a city? How large of a school are you looking for? Once you do this, you can eliminate a lot of schools that do not meet your criteria.

Also, if there is a specific major you are interested in, I would make sure to only look at schools that offer that major.

Hope this help!

Kelleen recommends the following next steps:

Create a list of things you want in a school.
Tour some schools that you think you may be interested in!

Richard’s Answer

It all depends on what's most important to you. There's not one thing that will fit everybody, and only you can choose that. To get you started, though, here's a list of a few questions:
1) do they have the major you want?
2) will be happy? Does the social situation fit your personality?
3) Does it fit your financial situation?
4) do they have clubs that fit your interest?
5) Do they have resources to get you summer internships and eventually a job or graduate school
6) look for desirable locations. You may end up living in the city in which you attend college.
