What should you expect if you want to become a trauma nurse?

I have always wanted to become a nurse and within the last few months I have been looking into the different kinds of things I can do with a nursing degree and decided trauma nursing sounded interesting and something different from what I would of expected but I'm still not quite sure on what to expect if I decided to go into trauma nursing. #nursing #nurse #trauma-nursing #science #hospital #hospital-and-health-care

Interesting indeed. You might consider joining the Navy or Army as a nurse and get yourself involved in field hospitals and combat injuries/wounds as a stepping stone toward trauma nursing. Large, inner-city hospitals are always in need of trauma personnel.

What you can expect is things you'd never expect to see. A strong stomach, a cold, detached demeanor that allows you to perform life-saving acts without "losing your cool" are essential ingredients. You will be asked to make instant decisions. You must know all your equipment and procedures without looking anything up. There will be no time for that in most cases.

Good luck. Be strong.

Expect the unexpected. When working as a trauma nurse you never know what will come in the front door or by ambulance. You could expect to work on a stroke patient or a STEMI, heart attack, patient within the first hour of your shift and still have eleven hours left to work. You can also expect not to eat within a twelve hour shift. Be prepared and have some kind of quick snack in your locker like a candy bar. You can expect to smell and see things that would make a billy goat puke. You can also expect to work with people you love and hate to work with. , That's with saying if you are really busting your tail and feel like you are drowning in your work that's when you find out what kind of friend you have in a co worker ,do they help you or do they let you drown. Expect to feel like during a shift you are not coming back tomorrow and at the end of your shift you will never quit being a trauma nurse. It's a good feeling when you actually save someone's life with the technology at hand. Another thing you could expect from a trauma nurse is that you are not specialized in one specific field of nursing. You are specialized in geriatric, pediatric, cardiac, orthopedic, psyche etc..., everything. I know this sounds like a lot of expectation from a nurse but at the end of the day it is the most rewarding job you could have as a nurse. I hope this helps.
