Corinne’s Answer

Business management focuses more on what you will need to know to run a business: operations, communication, management, accounting, human resources, IT, marketing, etc. International business is going to focus on international markets, international customs, international economics, etc. If you were planning to run a business in your country then business management would be a great major. If you want to potentially travel a lot and do you business across national borders, then international business is for you.

Corinne recommends the following next steps:

Make an appointment with a guidance counselor at the University you want to attend and discuss these two majors.
Look at the course catalog of the University want to attend and view the courses listed under each of these majors. See which classes are more appealing to you.

International business can prepare you for jobs that have more of an international relations bent, such as at the State Department, international organizations such as the World Bank that value knowledge of private and public sector more than business operations, or consulting.

Audra’s Answer

What is the main motivation to switch? There are some nuances to global firms that aren't as applicable to domestic only firms. I think if your end goal is to work for a global multinational firm, International Business makes sense, but there is likely some (possibly a lot of) credit overlap between the two. You should find out how much as it should be possible to do both and have a dual major.

I obtained minors in international studies by doing a semester in Italy as an undergraduate and then in graduate school I spent a semester in China. My degree major at the undergraduate level was Economics but in a business college so B.S. not B.A.

I don't know how others feel, but I would expect someone majoring in International Business to do some part of their study/internship overseas. Granted, with Covid-19, studying/working overseas might not be possible.
