Richard’s Answer
Consider becoming a pediatrician. During residency, the hours can be brutal and sleep deprivation is definitely a problem. However, after training, physicians can join a practice that better suits their needs. If having more free time is important, a physician can work fewer hours. The trade-off is making less money and potentially having less interesting cases.

I agree. Pediatrics seems like a natural option for you. Subspecializing in the field could give you more free time in the future as well.

Over the last 30 years the opportunity to both have a fulfilling medical career and a succesful family life has markedly improved. More important that choosing a specilaty is picking the group with whom you work when you go to start your career. Some groups are very intent on making money and working lots of hours, others are more willing to hire additional caregivers to assure that each perso works a reasonable schedule.
Many specilaties now refer all their night and weekend calls to others such as hospitalists.
