Chandrasekar’s Answer

Hi Anand....Congratulations on your MSc IT. I am sure you are working a job related to MSc IT. Bangalore is the IT hub of the world, Chennai is not far behind.. Coimbatore is currently a very good alternative for IT companies as the cost of operations are very high in Chennai and Bangalore. Hence you should find very good opportunities in these places. Salaries for IT professionals in these cities are very good compared to remote locations. However the cost of living is comparitively higher in these locations.

As you are in the initial phase of your career a small piece of advise. Do not go behind money. Focus on a job where you can make a difference, what you love doing most. Money will follow you.

Shashank’s Answer

Hello Anand,

Congratulations on completing M.Sc. IT. I am sure you have attended one or more Campus Drives if available.
I would recommend you to get a CV ready and upload it on websites like "shine.com", "naukri.com"
I would also recommend you to contact a few consultancies in Chennai/Bangalore and provide them your profile as they provide good help for beginners.
In meantime try to do some courses on the topics of your choice such as "Programming" or "Web Designing", and try to gain a certification for the same as it helps to get a Job faster.

Brahadesh’s Answer

HI Anand, Thanks for the question. Congratulations on your Masters. Although you have not provided information on what is your area of interest, i can offer a general guideline on how to go about choosing a technical line.

Broadly classified there can be two types of IT jobs. One is in Software development and Testing and the other is in IT Infrastructure management and deployment.

Skill sets you may need may be different according to whatever you choose.

If you are interested in being a Software engineer, you would need excellent command on any of the programming languages such as C, C++, Java, Python etc, Python skills are most sought after these days and is quite easy to learn. if you are interested in becoming an App developer, there are courses for that too. However getting a fairly decent salary as a junior app programmer may be difficult. However, if you are a fairly decent Software programmer, then a lot of job openings available in Tier 1, Tier 2 companies in all of the cities you mentioned.

If you are interested in IT Infrastructure management and deployment. then there are a lot of options.

Server Management, Database Management, network Management, Storage, DataCenter, Cloud so on and so forth.

of the above in terms of employment prospects with a higher pay package is generally seen in Network, Cloud and Data Center. For an entry level person like yourself, for the 1st year, Salary should be less of a concern but landing that good role should be more. Once you land a good position in any of the technology area above, salaries multiply with years of experience. When i say a good position, i mean, landing a position with any of IT service providers such as Infosys, TCS etc, or a position with Product companies such as Cisco, Juniper etc..

Typically the above companies focus a lot on developing their talent and you will see good oppurtunity to choose and develop your skills.

Typically the first thing to do is to get yourself certified according to the area you choose.. for Networking it usually is CCNA / CCNP. For Data base it is Oracle Certified courses, For Cloud it is Vmware etc..

Once you have an entry level certification, then get a in-depth knowledge in your area. Read and watch the tonnes of content on the internet.

Remember - a certification will only go as far as getting you an interview, to get the Job, you need to know your stuff. Hiring managers can easily see through knowledge versus certificate.. Having said that, having both certification and knowledge will set you apart from the competition.

Lastly, it is one thing having technical skills, but being able to speak fluent english and being able to articulate answers usually makes the difference in a job interview. So, do not ignore this aspect and work on getting your softskills to the industry standards.

A combination of good decision making on your carrer track, research, preparation will usually land you a good job relatively easily in Bangalore, Chennai or Coimbatore.

Hope this helps, please feel free to comment if you need any clarifications.

Hi Anand, There are a lot of opportunities that you can tap into in Bangalore, Chennai and Coimbatore. You can research on the kind of domain(Banking, Telecom, IOT..) you would like to get into and probably do some courses related to them(An example would be Openstack,etc..) and make yourself ready for opportunities. Also there are various types of jobs in IT like Development(Usually you need to be good at coding), Testing (Need to know the usage of different tools used for testing), Technical Customer Support(You will need to have good communication, Troubleshooting skills and knowledge of the product you would support). Find your area of interest and do your job search and research companies that offer such kind of work. The pay is something that you should not worry at this point in time of your career, focus on learning and apply your learnings where-ever you get opportunities and money will come with the knowledge you gain with your learning and experience.
