How important is networking in the business world with employees in the same work field?

I am currently a high school senior in Florida. I am looking to continue my education in college with a degree in sports management or business/ sports law. Afterwards I plan to attend law school in order to pursue a successful career as a sports agent. This school year I am doing an internship at a sports agent firm and want to know in what ways I can put myself out there to get the most beneficial experience. #business #law #sports-management #sports-agent #negotiation

Hi Renee! I think networking is huge. Probably one of the best tips of advice I can give is to always be networking whenever you get a chance. But also, don't just meet someone just to meet them and no I'm not contradicting myself. The best way I can explain here is think about a movie you watched that you didn't really like - now imagine you were in a grocery store and the leading celebrity in that movie was in line in front of you waiting to check out. Obviously you want to say something, but you don't know this celebrity from any other movie except the one you hated - what do you say to that celebrity... "Hi, I really hated what you did, but you are really beautiful and cool!" This situation has now just become super awkward for both you and the celebrity. Networking should be something that is strategic and used to help in your personal and professional development. Definitely get out there and meet people in your field - it will only help as you progress in your career!

Hopefully this is helpful - best of luck!

Networking is extremely important, it will help to broaden your knowledge base of an industry and also open up potential employment opportunities. I suggest that for each person you network with attempt to learn from them 2 people in the industry that would be willing to meet you.

Networking is always very important not only with employees in the same work field but also with other professionals. Networking can provide resources for advice and mentorship as well as connections into all other aspects of life. I once heard a story of a successful business owner who had made a networking connection to an executive of a Fortune 500 company outside of his industry. They set a lunch to more formally meet and the business owner took the opportunity to ask for advice on family and parenting and balancing running a business as he and his wife were raising small children. The business owner knew the executive had raised 3 children who were out of college and used his networking to solicit advice. Networking can offer many benefits and should be a priority throughout your career.

I think people are way more open to meeting than you would expect. Volunteer for extra projects if they become available, but also just reach out to people. Talk to people you work more closely with first, like a mentor or manager, and see if they can help connect you with people who suit your interests :)
