Peter’s Answer

Megan:

If you have an aptitude for math and are majoring in Biology, you might consider specializing in statistics. Biological research often generates reams of data and good statistical analyses are required make sense of this data. This is a skill that is always in demand.

As an aside, I, to, majored in Biology as an undergraduate. However, I got a Masters Degree in Engineering and ended up with a rewarding career in Civil Engineering-Water Resources. It is possible to keep your horizons open and see what opportunities present themselves early in your career.

Good Luck, Pete Sturtevant, P.E.

Anita’s Answer

Combining biology with math and/or statistics can be a very powerful combination if you decide to pursue data science. Some basic level of programming can help you go a long way in using some of the software to understand trends, correlations and probabilities. Hope that helps!

Katelyn’s Answer

My spouse has a Bachelors Degree in Zoology with an emphasis on Fisheries Biology and he is currently in the Information Technology field. Just because you have a degree in a specific field doesn't mean that you can't use the skills that you've learned in your Biology degree in another field.

Biology entails alot of research and analytic skills which can be used in a variety of different fields. Keep an open mind.

Vernon’s Answer

A career in biology automatically includes extraordinary math skills. If you will be entering the job market during the next four years, I suggest you look at Europe or Australia/New Zealand for a good research job. Or, if you have the money, pursue advanced degrees.

Clearly, our biosphere is under grave threats from the human being's rapacious appetite for consuming resources. Being involved in the cutting edge technologies that either prevent further erosion of our planet's life support systems, or work toward reversing the trends is a most important philosophy to develop in your professional career. Ecosystems, oceanography and tropical medicines are also very intriguing in that there is progress to be made before these fields are irrelevant.
