If you could tell a nursing student one piece of advice, what would it be?

I am hoping to become a nurse someday, and I was wondering what advice you would have for me? #nursing #medicine #nurse #healthcare #registered-nurses #medicine-school

My piece of advice would be to follow your passion and not give up! Nursing school can be very hard and trying, at times, but the reward is far beyond anything you could hope. I absolutely love being a nurse and that is a wonderful feeling to have!

Don't be afraid to ask questions. Your instructors are there to make sure you are understanding everything if you do not understand something ask and keep asking until you understand. Try to do Volunteer work at a local Hospital or clinic. It might also help you to understand what you are doing if you are actually doing it and learning. You will also be able to ask others at the place you are volunteering about school things that you are not sure about. Sometimes seeing things in real life leaves a lasting memory of what you need to do instead of a lecture.

Hi Angelina!

My best advice would be to
- determine that nursing is the most appropriate career area for you

- start at a community college as the cost is more reasonable, the classes are smaller

Too many people spend too much money on a education and end up with huge debt that is very difficult to repay. Here are some good tips for you:

Selecting a career area is like buying a pair of shoes. They may look great, but you need to try them on and wear them for a while to determine fit and comfort.

Here are some good tips on networking to gain valuable information and create valuable relationships:

Here are some next steps:
- talk to your school counselor about becoming involved in coop, intern, shadowing, and volunteer programs that will allow you to see the inside view of nursing so you can see that they do, how they got there, what advice they have, and how you feel about it
- talk to the head of alumni relations at Lakeland Community College to arrange to meet and talk to graduates in nursing to meet and visit them and learn more

Let me know if and how this is or help. Keep me posted. I would like to follow your progress.

Thank you comment icon Hi! Thank you for your helpful answer! I took some of the personality/career tests, and they were very helpful and informative. Also, thank you for all the tips that you gave me, I appreciate it! As for your "next steps", I am homeschooled, so I don't really have a school counselor! I do volunteer at my local Medical Campus, and I am looking into a summer volunteer opportunity at University Hospital. I will look into contacting the head of Lakeland, thank you! That is a really good idea. I will keep you posted, thanks again! Angelina
Thank you comment icon You may be able to use the school counselor. The state law says that you can take advantage of the school's activities and participate as a part time student. It would be helpful to ask. It appears that you would get your diploma from Mentor (is that right?), so I think that they would want to help you to succeed. After all, your parents are paying taxes to support the school system. Please check into this and let me know. The sooner you can talk to the head of alumni relations, the better. Whenever someone says "What are you doing these days?" Say "I am exploring nursing. Who do you know who can help me to learn more about the inside view of the nursing career?" You never know who knows whom. Great things are coming your way. Ken Simmons
