Which field of Business is the most creative?

Hi there,
I'm a junior in high-school currently looking at potential career paths I could embark on. I've been considering undertaking Digital Marketing as though I like the general field of Business, I also hope to instill creativity in what I do. Would you say that Digital Marketing is the most creative business degree? If not, what others would you recommend I take?

Thanks. #business #marketing #career #college-major #digitalmarketing

Ryan’s Answer

Hi Elisha,

This is a great question! I've worked in digital marketing for 3+ years now and I love it. It's a pretty big umbrella, so there are many different parts to it. Your standard Digital Ads are creative but you will run into confinements with ad policies and character limits. SEO will present some of those same challenges. I'd say the most creative areas of the digital side are the design side and the content side. I was in a primarily ad-driven role for the past few years but recently jumped to the content side to give myself more opportunity to be creative.

Hope this helps and best of luck!

Ryan

Having been exclusively doing digital marketing for the last 10+ years, I will say that it can be a very creative field. I'm not a visually creative person (i.e. design) but I am a creative problem solver and that is why I've enjoyed the digital space for all these years. Digital is great because there are a million tools, tactics and strategies out there to use. What I enjoy is taking a business/marketing problem and figuring out how to solve it using the different types of resources at my disposal. The field is great for exploration and for those with a scientific mind as you can always try new things and collect data to influence new experiments.

Now, is it the "most" creative field in the business world? I don't know whether it is or not, but it has to be up there. I would imagine entrepreneurship has its benefits as well as sales; but both of those take a special type of person.

Hi!

I think that digital marketing is a very creative field. I believe that many parts of marketing are very creative. Social media marketing is very creative and especially when influences et involved. Apps like Instagram and TikTok show a creative side to people while also going with the trends. Advertising is also a very creative field where you have to think out of the box to see how to impress people and get them interested in your product.

I appreciate that you are a junior in high school and already thinking about your professional life. Well done!

I've been directly and indirectly within the broad field of Digital Marketing for over 15 years. As someone previously mentioned, this area is really quite diverse, as there are all sorts of components that feed into Digital Marketing. From technology (data collection, web design) to analysis (data analytics) to content creation to personalization, there's a great deal that goes into a successful Digital Marketing program.

To that end, I think there's an incredible amount of "creativity" that can play into many facets of the field. Areas such as content creation, testing and personalization, and overall marketing strategy rely upon creative individuals who can make their brands unique. The ability to help drive innovation and disruption is a tangible offshoot of successful creativity and is what I really love about this field.

Ngoc’s Answer

Hi Elisha,

Definitely when one thinks of a major that encourages creativity, out-of-the-box thinking, Marketing would very likely first come to mind of many. As I have been working professionally for a couple of years now, I would say it doesn't stop at just Marketing. I am working in Card Product Management, previously Relationship Management (or Sales in short) and they require just as much. So I would rather say that it's more likely about what kind of organization you would be working for and the scope of work. If a company/ role promotes open conversations, welcomes disruptions, innovation or embraces challenging the status quo, then your creativity would be recognized everywhere regardless of department you're from. For now, if you are considering and not sure what to opt for, you can pursue general Business first, then apply in some roles that excite you as soon as you're eligible to work and figure out from there. You can change your major while in college/ university and even if somehow you unfortunately were not able to, you can redirect your career to the path that you think fits you the most, 'cause it's never too late to pursue your passion.

Hope this somehow comes useful to you. All the very best!

Cheers,
Ngoc (Nellie)
