Hi Qianlin,

When it comes to college, you can always go for more than one major, or a major and a minor.
My suggestion would be for, when it comes to selecting electives, outside of the requires classes for your Economics major, that you focus all your efforts in selecting classes to meet the film & media criteria. See how many credits are needed, the classes required, etc, and focus on those.

I hope this helps.

Best of luck!

Hi Qianlin,

I too am an economist! While it is true you can add a minor, you can also just take classes you are interested in without adding the minor if the requirements would undesirably increase the time it takes to get your degree. This option I would call a "focus" instead of a formal minor. The great thing about economics is you can apply it to almost any other field. As you probably know there is macroeconomics and microeconomics. Within microeconomics you study the different markets for goods and services of which includes film and media. For example here you could think about the competition between Marvel and DC movies. Both are similar film types dealing with adventure and super heros but how do they compete to make sure they still have new ideas and maintain a fan base. What would help or hurt the next release? If the Ironman character was the main reason people watched the Avengers what is expected to happen now? etc. That is just one small example of how you can apply your economic mindset and knowledge to film and media. I am not well versed in the media world so I hope it is one that makes sense! When you have papers to write see if there is a way to look at the film and media market space and do not be afraid to ask professors for help applying the material.

Hi Qianlin,

You always have the option to double major, or minor in one of those subjects. If you choose to study both economics and film, make sure you thoroughly research major/minor requirements for both programs. It would be helpful to plan out how many credits you will need to complete in each area of study for every year you are at school. As you're doing this, keep in mind what other credit requirements you will need to meet in order to graduate (for example, if you go to a liberal arts college, you may have a variety of subject requirements (language, science, philosophy etc.) that need to be completed in order to graduate). Planning ahead which subjects and credits you should be taking each semester will help ensure that you are able to graduate with a degree in both subjects.

If declaring a major/minor in both subjects seems too overwhelming-- don't worry! When I was in college, I majored in economics. However, I was able to explore a lot of other interesting subjects when completing college credits. Each semester, I took 2 or 3 economics courses, and the rest of the classes I took were reserved for other topics I was interested in. So keep in mind that throughout college, you have to complete a lot of course credits and it allows you to explore a lot of different interests. There are also so many possibilities with different clubs/extra curricular programs you choose to pursue. If you declare a major in one subject, you will still have so many opportunities to explore other interests.

I hope this is helpful!
