Hey Michael,

Finding internships related to computer science or data science within the open-source industry while still in high school can be an enriching experience that helps you get a head start in your chosen field. The open-source community is known for its collaborative nature and offers various opportunities to gain experience and develop your skills.

Check out open-source projects on platforms like GitHub or GitLab, where you can find numerous computer science and data science projects. Look for projects that align with your interests and skill level. Many open-source projects welcome contributors of all levels, including high school students. By actively participating in these projects, you'll learn from experienced professionals and demonstrate your dedication and skills to potential employers.

In addition to directly contributing to projects, consider attending local or virtual meetups, workshops, or conferences related to open-source technologies. Events like these can help you connect with professionals in the field and learn about internship opportunities. Networking is essential in the open-source community, so be proactive in reaching out to people and expressing your interest in learning and gaining experience.

You can also research non-profit organizations that support open-source initiatives and provide students with educational programs, mentorship, or internships. Examples include Outreachy, Google Summer of Code, and the Linux Foundation. These programs often offer stipends or other support for students working on open-source projects.

Hi Michael!
A great tool to find internship opportunities is LinkedIn. Using this website, you're able to showcase your interests, skills, and work experience to apply to a myriad of job opportunities. There are filters within the search that can narrow down job opportunities to specific sectors, levels (you would choose intern), areas, remote/in-person, salary, and much more! It's extremely useful, and something you'll be able to utilize for all future opportunities. You can also look to see where people from your town and high school have worked, which is a great way to get a connection going!

Michael, In HS or at any point during your life/career you have an opportunity to learn. It can be a formal internship, on-the-job or volunteering. Think about organizations or clubs you are currently part of. If you are part of a church and interested in website design or had skills in that area, you could ask if you can help with the church's website. Younger folks as yourself many times have social media experience, maybe you can help the church with their social media presence - posting events or the result of events. Maybe you have experience or interest in fashion and your church has an upcoming play where you can help with props or costumes. Maybe the youth group at the church needs help with younger kids and certain activities which you have skills in - art, athletics, etc. If you have a job, maybe you can ask about other areas where you can help out the company and learn another skill. First make sure it is okay with your supervisor and how this can be accomplished. If you have a hard time finding opportunities for Internships, why not look online? There are many learning opportunities available for free online. Do an online search that has your area of interest along with 'Free High School' keywords. Many colleges along with Google, LinkedIn, Khan Academy, EdX, etc have free courses in many skill areas. Also, your local library may have learning opportunities... I learned Python at my local library at 45 years old with five 10th graders! There are many summer programs. My daughter went to FIT (Fashion Institute of Technology) for a summer program in Art with college professors. She used these professors to ask for secondary college and career information for many years after HS... just like you are doing here. Another important fact... always list any skill you obtain whether within a job, internship or volunteering on your resume if it makes sense or is transferrable to a job you are applying for.

Frances recommends the following next steps:

Look for internships or learning opportunities online, within your community or a group you are already a part of
Ask others if they need help as an informal 'internship' type opportunity
Check out colleges which may have HS learning opportunities
Check out local libraries which may have learning opportunities

I would also try to attend career fairs in your local area or even virtual career fairs these days in the field you are interested in. You get your questions answered in probably 1:1 setting when attending some virtual fairs. Sometimes, community colleges have them as well. Also, agree with two responses above in make a list of few companies you are interested in. I would suggest you to keep checking their website frequently or by contacting the recruiter directly to see if they have any internships that can match your interest. Good luck!

Make a list of companies in your area - North Jersey has many pharmaceutical companies where they run internships.
Lockheed Martin in S Jersey encourages students to apply for the internship vs working in a fast food chain.
You will find most big employers offer internships and if you have good grades and have done volunteering while you were in the high school, you will have least path of resistance.
