Cynthia (Cindy)’s Answer

It begins with getting your undergraduate/bachelors degree in nursing, and then going on for your masters in nursing-choosing the psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner path. The undergraduate program will take you approximately four years, the length of time for the masters degree varies, depending on the college that you choose. It is typically between 2 to 3 years.

To become a PMHNP, or Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner, you must first become a Registered Nurse with an active license, then get accepted into an MSN or DNP level PMHNP program. Pass the program and complete all required clinicals. Graduate. Take the Boards Exam for certification. Apply to your state for licensing as a PMHNP.

Hello! I am currently in CRNA school. I believe most of them are doctorate only at this point. This is my advice for you.. make sure you are earning solid grades throughout your undergraduate degree (Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree). Most schools look for a higher GPA as it is fairly competitive. Next, you need to start shadowing a CRNA or MDA as soon as possible! Get as much experience in the OR as possible. I think this helped me a lot when I was applying. Also, this goes without saying, but make sure you are volunteering in your community. It doesn't have to be medical related. Second, after you graduate with your BSN get into the intensive care unit and start working. You don't need to go into med-surg like most people will tell you... Most programs will require 1-2 years of experience minimum in adult ICU. There are other things like taking the GRE and earning your CCRN which can make you more of a competitive applicant. It's very doable if you are willing to put in the work. Good luck to you & God bless.
