John’s Answer

This is an interesting question.

The college where I went required all freshman to live on campus in the dormitories, then after that you could live where ever you wanted. I kind of liked dorm life so I ended up living in the dorms all four years.

There is a great sense of community in the dorms, I became great friends with most of the residents who lived close by on my floor. Also, it was easy, there were no bills and no kitchen or bathrooms to clean, so I could focus on my studies.

One great disadvantage of the dormitories was that you had to pay for the entire semester in advance and that took a big chuck of cash. Students who were living in apartments could pay their rents month to month which had some budgeting advantages. In addition, I think it might have been possible to live more frugally in an apartment with 2 or three roommates that to live in the dorm with meals.

Not everyone was like me, many, many other students lived in apartments around town and they thought I was crazy for staying in the dormitories all four years. But it worked for me.

Hey Noah! I remember my freshman year living in a dorm and I had a great time! One of the best parts was making new friends with the people I lived with and others in the dorm. It's a fantastic way to expand your social circle since everyone brings their own group of friends, allowing you all to mingle and form lasting connections.

The dorm life also has some exciting social perks - most floors have an RA who organizes fun events, creating even more chances for you to bond with your fellow dorm-mates. Plus, dorms are usually super convenient when it comes to going to class, which is a blessing for first-year students still finding their footing on campus.

Safety was another advantage I noticed living in a dorm. Based on your school's current technology, you might find security cameras or even key card access to ensure a secure environment. All in all, I had a fantastic experience living in a dorm and I hope this helps you make a decision. Enjoy your college adventure!

There's a lot of benefits, but here are some that I find beneficial.
~you get to meet people from different places, different backgrounds, different interests from you. this is probably the best benefit because it lets experience things with new people. learn new things from them that will help you grow as a person. just seeing things from a different perspective.
~you're close to everything, especially if you don't have a car. you're not far away from your classes, the library, learning centers, etc. will save you a lot of time and money.
~cheaper than off campus living. you may also have meals included in the cost of dorm living.

There are a quite a few perks for staying in the on-campus dorm.

1. Social life- you will have the opportunity to meet and interact with individuals your age. Develop lasting friendships through the course of your college years and possibly through life.

2. Culture- you will meet students from all walks of life. Can definitely introduce you to different cultures and peoples' backgrounds.

3. Safety- almost all colleges and universities have an on-campus police/security force to maintain the safety of all students and faculty

4. Distance- living on campus allows one to be in close proximity to where you have classes, library, dining halls, stadiums/arenas, etc.

The benefits of staying on campus is you meet so many people from all backgrounds. You learn the culture of your school. You get to have some independence from your parents. The only downside is paying for it. You are paying a lot of money to basically live in a small space with other people, so you have to think about whether that is the way you want to live. There are lots of options.

Hi, there are many advantages to staying on Campus. It puts you right in the thick of things and people. You get to meet so many different people which will help you understand how to work around others not like yourself. You might meet someone that has the same interests as you so then you can have someone to share your experiences with. You might meet someone totally opposite you which would give you the opportunity to learn how to deal with that person. I was very lucky as I met one of my best friends in college. We are still in contact today and I am the Godparent to one of her children. So you can meet someone that will be in your life for a long time. You can always talk about the "old days" and get a good laugh.
Good Luck!!!

Living on campus is packed with numerous advantages. Generally, it's a safer option compared to residing off campus. Plus, it's a wonderful chance to meet and connect with diverse people from your dorm who hail from various places. An additional perk is the convenience of not having to commute to campus from your home, as you're already there. This will spare you heaps of time and energy, giving your college journey a smooth and easy start.

Living in a dorm is an amazing opportunity to fully immerse yourself in the vibrant college life and deeply explore the campus. Being in the heart of it all means proximity to the dining hall and classrooms as well as easy access to all the essential facilities. In many colleges, you can conveniently walk or bike wherever you need to go!

Embrace the chance to solely focus on your education and the plethora of exciting college activities without the stress of dealing with landlords, rental agreements, rental insurance, or even transportation to campus. Be mindful that living off-campus might have more distractions and lean more towards the local community rather than the college one.

While the potential downside of dorm life might include some noisy neighbors, don't let that hold you back! Take the time to research how dorms are supervised and find a setting that suits you best. Ultimately, the dorm experience can be extremely rewarding and fulfilling.

Wishing you all the best in this exciting chapter of your life – you've got this!

Renea’s Answer

Dear heart,

I do not know many benefits of dorming because I did not when I went to college, but I do know you will not have to drive to class every morning and also take into consideration there may be a train that you have to beat to get to class. A consideration also is if your parents cars are good enough to come get you during spring break, and winter break as the dorms will be closed, but of course consider money you will need for gas to drive back home during these periods while living in the dorms. Also I believe meals are provided when you live in the dormitory. Also it may be kind of hard to study at the same time as your roommate being in the room with you, but you could go to the library. Also some students come to college for the college life and not their studies and that will not gel well with what you are trying to accomplish AND PLEASE DO!

Godspeed,
Si'van

James’s Answer

Living in a dorm is an amazing experience! You get to meet so many students of different backgrounds. You will see the world as a much larger place then you ever thought it could be. Your own preconceived perceptions of others will be challenged.

As others have pointed out, you will be closer to campus so if you don't have a car you won't have that expense!

If you go with a campus life , don't be surprised if after a couple of years you want to try living off campus. You will find yourself growing and wanting more privacy.

Good luck!

Jeff’s Answer

Hi Noah,
I stayed in a campus dorm during my freshman year. I would recommend it to everyone. The benefits are that you become very familiar with the entire college campus, the facilities are maintained by the college, but most importantly, I believe that the college experience isn't just about what you learn in the classroom but the social aspect outside of the classroom. Being in a dorm allows many students to form friendships and for many, it's a big step toward independence. The dorms usually have activities specifically for this purpose, which I would also encourage if you decide to stay in a dorm. Best of luck in college!

Jerome’s Answer

While I enjoyed living on campus for my first year at SFSU, the cost of doing so (paid by student loans) took a while to pay off. If you can find a group to rent a house or know someone you can stay with off campus, I might recommend that option.

You can still find many ways to participate and find engagement without staying on campus. Now, if you have scholarships that cover the cost, go for it!
