Can it be helpful? Almost certainly yes, depending on what you're trying to learn. However, it's very important that you speak with your school or instructors about what their policies are for AI first, to avoid any misunderstandings or potential academic misconduct (i.e., cheating concerns).

You might think of Generative AI tools like ChatGPT, Bard, or others, like calculators. Some school settings allow calculators to be used, whereas in other settings a calculator may not be used. Generative AI is somewhat similar -- but only by speaking with your school will you know what their rules are.

As of right now (May 2023), many schools are still figuring out their policies and guidelines for the use of AI tools.

Now, if it turns out that your school does allow for the use of ChatGPT, there are several ways you can potentially benefit from generative AI tools:

- Asking AI about a topic to confirm your understanding, or to ask for new explanations of concepts that you would like more information about.
- Asking AI for examples of concepts that you are hoping to learn more about
- Asking AI to explain a school or career goal you have and to ask it for suggestions of actions you could take to achieve your goals
- Asking AI to explain an academic challenge you are having and to ask it for suggestions of how to address that challenge
- Asking AI to generate sample questions for you to test your knowledge of a particular concept, and then to identify ways you could improve your answers

If you're new to using generative AI models like ChatGPT, it is crucial to be aware of potential concerns surrounding:

- Privacy: Be cautious when providing personal or sensitive information to AI tools, as the data may be visible and used by the company providing the AI model. Protect your privacy!
- Reliability: Generative AI models are still very new, and don't always do a good job. They often produce inaccurate or unrealistic results. Always fact-check and verify any information provided by AI before relying on it.
- Ethics: Everyone using AI tools needs to be responsible for using them ethically. This is a hot topic being hotly debated now -- check social media for conversations about AI Ethics for more.

Source: I've been using AI tools for personal use and for work for many years now, and am involved with the development of several AI projects at the moment.

Jared, CareerVillage.org Team recommends the following next steps:

Speak with an educator at your school about whether (and how) you are permitted to use AI tools
(If permitted) Start a chat with an AI tool about a topic that you know quite a lot about, to test out the extent to which it is able to speak on that topic without hallucinating
(If permitted) Start a chat with an AI tool about a topic of great interest to you, to advance your knowledge and follow your curiosity. If it makes factual claims, practice fact-checking them to see if they are true.

ChatGPT is a tool. It can be good, but it's imperfect--I've seen it be confidently wrong before. It depends how and when you use it, and you should check its output so you don't solely rely on it.

Angel’s Answer

genAI like ChatGPT can be used to quickly collect and prioritize research for school. For example if you’re looking to gather information about the history of WWII, you can prompt chatGPT to help provide background, key facts, etc. as with using any tool, especially AI, it’s important to still conduct some extra review to validate the accuracy of the responses.

Hagen’s Answer

I'm with Daniel. It's not just useful it is essential. Being a AI augmented Knowledge worker is going to become the norm in business.
So here's the thing. Most people who are following OpenAI et al, are thinking 'Now I don't have to use System 2 (hard - See Thinking Fast and Slow) thinking ever again (woohoo!).' However, what's really happening is ChatGTP is providing you with data very effective and efficiently so it's actually more demanding - you don't get to fart around looking for information on Google or videos etc.. You have the information you need immediately so you have to get back to critical think immediately. It's actually a lot of work if you seriously want to know something.
That's the key, BTW. Do you actually want to understand the topic you're researching and learning? If not, just have ChatGPT write your essay or code. The problem with that approach is no one will hire you latter because you didn't learn anything. YOU have nothing to offer.

Hagen recommends the following next steps:

Decide you actually want to learn and use ChatGPT to teach you - it's a terrific tool.
Determine how you like to learn things and then learn to incorporate AI into that program.

Daniel’s Answer

Hey Leo! 😊

In my job, I absolutely love how much time it saves when I'm searching for something super specific. Sure, I could use Google, and it might take more or less time, but what's really cool is how it sometimes provides unexpected answers. This actually encourages me to keep asking questions and see how the tool improves its responses. So, I'm not just blindly following what it says – I'm learning and growing along the way! ✨ I believe that's the best way to make use of such awesome tools.

Take care,

Remember its a tool and its certainly a useful tool but you should be aware of how to use it and when to use it. Its good for getting the information but also at the same time don't just rely on it to do everything for you. Its there to help you make smarter, enhance your creativity and should be used as a guidance rather than a copy/paste. I would say grow with it but don't depend on it.

Breana’s Answer

Harnessing the power of AI tools such as Chat GPT can be an amazing asset for on-demand learning. Numerous comments here have touched on the importance of using it 1) as a helpful instrument and 2) in a morally responsible way, but I absolutely encourage you to learn how to optimize its use!

Experiment with strategies like:
1. Requesting it to design a personalized study timetable for you
2. Seeking its assistance to delve further into a topic you're finding challenging to completely grasp.
