How much demand is there for a lawyer?

I have been thinking about career options lately and one job that i have been interested in is a lawyer (specifically criminal defense but im not sure yet), but I have been told that there is not much demand for lawyers and that it could be difficult to find a well paying job in my area.

Like everyone else said the demand depends on the city/town you are in. However in my opinion the demand for attorneys stays pretty high and steady in general. Every industry I have worked in requires attorneys. One area that has pretty high demand at the moment is an attorney that would be able to review software license agreements. Those are unique and as we know new software demands are pretty high just about in any company.

As a current law student, it can be daunting to pursue law, particular in specialised, niche areas in which there may be fewer job opportunities. Whilst Criminal Law isn't the most lucrative area, there are many career opportunities from working as a litigation lawyer, working in-house as legal counsel for criminal law firms or working in regulation, advisory or policy making roles.
