Keyston’s Answer

It's natural for interests to change. What helped me was focusing on what I'm good at and what provides stability for my family. Maybe you could explore those interests on the side while excelling in your current role.

Mary Anne’s Answer

I remember this type of uncertainty. Don’t stress about choosing a defined path. Start by researching a few fields that interest you. Determine what education/background is needed and talk with people already in those fields to gain insight.

Determine what your current life goals are and seek out those areas that best position you to achieve them. Be open to areas you may not have considered.

Whatever you decide, be selective about your employer. Make sure their culture is an environment that allows you to grow, learn and succeed.

I highly suggest you consider job shadowing a few individuals in each of your fields of interest. Experiencing diverse environments and tasks can greatly influence your perception of a role! In addition, taking a personality test can be a beneficial way to understand yourself better and identify jobs that could be a perfect match for you. Finally, jot down your top 10 priorities, such as being stimulated, earning potential, work-life harmony, benefits, and personal satisfaction among others. Use these as a guide in refining your career choices. This is a surefire way to align your work with what truly matters to you!

Michelle’s Answer

Hello, Nowrin !

I want to assure you that it is perfectly acceptable to not know what type of work one wants to do in the future. As time goes on, you will learn more about your specific interests, what suits you personally and the choice will come easier to you - but in your own time.

It may seem daunting to go through this period of many interests but nothing leading to something. This can indeed be a period of discovery, though. It will depend on your social circle, your environment and small step successes when you try things. Decide whether you want a career that will require a length of time in school or short term training. Take small steps in your decisions for this. Know that it will be a choice that you make, not someone else making it for you.

How you will know is that you will suddenly come to the realization that a specific career is where you're needed. It's not exactly easy to describe this feeling because it is different for everyone. It will almost feel like all the pieces of a puzzle fit together and the puzzle is complete. You will be inspired by purpose and personal intent. This is why some people at the age of five know what they want to do or be when they are older. They have been around or in some way exposed to various professions and everything looks good until one day, one type of work starts to stand out among all the rest ! Opportunities sometimes come at the most unexpected times and it's different for every person.

Give yourself precious time to experience life. We've all taken jobs that were boring and didn't care for much but that's all in finding out what you do not like , which is just important as knowing what you do like. If you are a little anxious because the people around you are situated in knowing what to go into, do not worry over this. Try to be a good social support to them and share in their successes. It will come to you one day. Also, life is very exciting so it's no wonder that many people have many interests and can't choose right away. Experience all that you can - that will help you decide. Take your focus off of a timeline for your decision and just enjoy what comes your way or what you are guided to. I think you'll be fine !

I do hope that this will help with feeling more comfortable with your not settling on one career yet. I wish you all the best in your journey and path to self discovery. There's a lot out there and you can do or be whatever you believe you should do !

Carly’s Answer

Hi Norwin, thanks for your question and such a great one! First and foremost, don't feel too pressured to make a decision yet - it is great to have a broad set of interests and hobbies, and you're not the only one thinking about this. A few ideas you can try before deciding to pick a career path can be through job shadowing, learning from e-courses / online resources, and reaching out to people to learn about their careers. Another idea could be to map out what a possible career path would look like; whether it is a singing career or pursuing law school, these paths may be different from each other, so it's important to think about requirements for each (singing school, exams for law school, etc). Most importantly, it is okay to switch passions/careers/etc along the way! I just started my career and I definitely feel comfort when people tell me this as well. Some of the most successful people are successful because they have experience in many careers and changed their paths many times. Whatever it is you decide to pursue, give it your all, and remember there are always ups and downs in any career path.

Harvey’s Answer

Almost everyone will tell you to follow what you are interested in, which is natural. But people almost never mention that you should also ask yourself what kind of lifestyle you want to live.

Remember that while your job is a large part of your life, beyond your 9-5 is a majority of your time, so what do you want to do with it? What kind of house do you want to live in? What do you need if you want to travel often or if your hobbies are expensive? Would you value working from home or being in the office, or being outside?

You may have a burning desire to do a particular job, but perhaps if you are not as set on a particular line of work, think about what type of job will facilitate the lifestyle that you want, and you will be surprised at what you find!
