Should I go to college? This is a question most of us ask ourselves at one point in our lives. It's a big decision and you're not alone. College can be a crucial step for those who are looking to further their education, specialize in certain fields or advance their career.

First ask yourself what you think you want to do, then look that up and see the requirements for that. Is a college degree one of them? This could help influence the decision for you.

If you're still unsure whether college is for you or not, I recommend visiting a local community college. Many in-state/local CC offer free and lower cost options for students. Meet with an academic advisor or simply sign up to take a general ed course. This way you will get a taste for what to expect in college and if it's a good fit for you. A general ed course is helpful in case you decide to continue with more courses as it would be applied towards your degree. Be sure whatever course you choose to start with, make sure it's something you have an interest in so you start off engaged.

College absolutely can help you on your journey to becoming successful.

Hi Dianna!
College is great for making connections with professors and other students, as well as recieving work that is going to help your career. College is not only great for gaining useful information and connections, but also to get to know yourself better! When you are in college you truly get to know what your work ethic is like away from home. The times of classes are very different from high school and so is the amount of work you get. If you do not complete an assignmet, especially in a large lecture class, the professor simply will not run after you. You are responsible of completing the work that will soley be helpful to you. Because of this, you get to know yourself better and improve the way you work, the way you live.

Hello Dianne and great question!

Simply put, if you find that you do not want to go to college, you can take a gap year. There are certain enrollment times that every college prohibits and permits when enrolling for next year's enrollment period. If you find that you are currently out of school, and would like to attend college: I would recommend to first enroll in a community college. Once applied and enrolled for a certain time period, you are eligible to transfer to your designated university that you'd like to attend. Focus on your studies and make sure that you are applying yourself, otherwise it will be harder to transfer.

However, if you do not feel that you would do best in college or a further education, that is always completed understandable as well. I know many individuals that have skipped college, and gone into the workforce straight out of high school. It all depends on what you think, and how you feel about your future endeavors.

I hope this helped, and good luck in the future!

Thank you
Molly H.

Nicolas’s Answer

No, it won't help you become more successful than anyone else but whatever you learn can be utilized, and utilized on a job that benefits you and your family. The way I see it is a postal worker who does twenty years, saves up a retirement plan, and provides for his family is just as successful if not more than Joe who is in umpteen amounts of debt searching for his doctoral degree. You have to ask yourself if you know you are capable of utilizing the information, and what type of information will be needed in today's economy. With all that said and if you can do it, you will be deemed more successful than a mail carrier if you follow through with your obligations and just do it. Although the time it takes could be treacherous and you might not enjoy the pressure, but remember to chip away at it little by little. It takes courage.

A good college will construct you into thinking, acting, and behaving in a way that is elite for maintenance and production of people, activities, and events. A good college will initiate you into a lifestyle of lifelong learning and give you an opportunity to use that in and outside of the workforce. It will organize your thoughts and spell out meaning for things that you wonder. A good college will promote you. A good college will believe in you and reinforce all effort up until this point of entering college. When you go to college you learn about everything and every job that doesn't even have to do with your major, but associations are made. Correlations built on correlations will allow you do indulge in information and be exposed to information and circumstances that you won't have at a trade school. You will inherit perspective, know to set boundaries that are healthy, and living nicely will be obtainable for years to come. When you think about college do you think about a dream of yours? Believe that the teachers are professionally trained to know the ins and outs of circumstances and situations that you are not familiar with and will guide you with the appropriate question asked. It can mold your future and set you up for success.

Fernando’s Answer

Yes, college can give you advantages, but so can any form of education. Take some time to really consider what you want for your future, your dreams and objectives, and let these guide your decisions. Allow yourself to dive into the areas you're curious about and experience them directly: you might find that reality often differs from what we imagine.

Some goals can be reached on your own through entrepreneurship, some will require a mandatory college degree. Use your time and resources wisely.

Natalie’s Answer

Attending college is a significant milestone, and while it may not be the ideal path for everyone, it holds considerable importance. It equips you with fundamental knowledge that is crucial in the professional sphere. Every student embarking on their college journey initially takes general courses, which include subjects like math, science, English, and history.

Upon completing these foundational courses, you'll not only gain a taste of the college experience, but also exposure to various career options. This exposure could be through resources like the career center, guidance counselors, and interactions with fellow students. A practical first step would be to take a career assessment test. The results of this test can serve as a guide, helping you make informed decisions about your future academic and career path.

Jerome’s Answer

I think college can be beneficial, but it doesn’t always equal success. If you are in doubt, I’d offer that you could work towards and AA, knock out your general studies and work while you do it.

You start to build up a resume, experience what college is like and you can decide as you go if it is beneficial.

I do think it’s easier to push through it after high school, as going back to school can be tough for some, but that certainly isn’t the only path.

Alan’s Answer

There are a number of ways college can help you. From a purely practical standpoint, college graduates earn almost twice what high school graduates do. But it's more than that. College, assuming you select good professors, teaches you critical thinking and decision making among a number of academic skills. It will help you decide on a career path and build a foundation for it. It's a very different experience from high school. Use it to explore who you are as, presumably, an emerging adult, and what you want to do with your life.

Arabhis’s Answer

College is a great starting point for having a successful career, and gaining valuable knowledge and experiences to aviate the next stage of your life.

I would say college gives you knowledge, but it’s also very important to make sure you are also learning outside of college. Attend educational events, travel if you can, and try to get internships in your industry in the first two years of your college career. Your fist entry level position should begin while you are in undergrad. Why? Because you want to already have tangible and real-world experiences in your industry when you graduate. Many professionals wait until they graduate, but it’s wise to be proactive to get ahead of the curve.

Wishing you the best!

McNeil’s Answer

Yes absolutely. Believe it or not college forces you to do your homework. We tend to put things off when an assignment isn’t due; even if it helps our career. It’s understandable college isn’t necessary, but if you know what you want it’s a super resource to getting connected with whatever you want. And when you find it no one says you have to finish. Because you already finished.
