A basic accounting degree can open many avenues for careers. Instituions such as banks, investment firms, or accounting departments within corporations are the most obvious choices. You can also pursue areas because of the strong emphasis the degree has with math such as actuarial services, tax analysis and accounting, financial reporting. To pursue an a pure accountant degree, it would be recommended to also gain your CPA license once your complete your degree which opens many more management opportunities as well as higher level financial positions in most companies. Another area to consider is to couple your accounting emphasis with courses in system technology. This would allow you to move into areas of working with conpanies in their groups that service or maintain the financial systems they work with to complete their analysis and reporting. It's an ever-changing area and has a lot of potential to it as well.

Accounting opens up many different fields. A friend of mine used his accounting degree as a base for working for Amtrak running a back shop. It gave him a basis for understanding the finances. I believe that it is the most flexible of any degree.

Accounting can open many doors - to small or large companies. In accounting, there are also many different jobs - general ledger, revenue, accounts payable, etc. I started in Accounting, and switched over to Procurement, which is a good mix of finance and legal knowledge. I love it. If you have a job in Accounting, and have a great work ethic, it can open doors to other job opportunities as well.
