HI Dulce!

I remember asking myself a similar question before I started college! I would saw that pursuing a degree in business is worth it as long as you know what you want to do with it once you finish college.

For example, you could focus on marketing, management, entrepreneurship, accounting, and many other areas! Try to find an industry that you see yourself in, and then go for it! As you are in school, take advantage of internship opportunities and networking events as these are the best ways to secure a job after graduation.

I decided to go for accounting, and I can confirm that it was very worth it for me. As soon as I completed my first internship, I was able to secure other jobs and continue working in the accounting industry while I was in school. With that experience, I was able to secure a good job offer that will help me stay financially secure.

Of course, everyone has different value systems. So, if business is not a career path that you think will keep you happy you may not find that it was worth it even if it keeps you financially secure. Definitely take time to consider what is most important to you!

I wish you all the best!

I have to tell you that I am old. When I started in the business world we were told how we could dress, had to wear heels, pantyhose and makeup. There were jobs that women could do and others that women were just not welcomed into. My parents told me that I "could" do whatever I set my mind to and it worked. I choose to "manage from the bottom". I have been "sales administrator" and "accounts receivable manager" in my past, but I find the frustration of personal life being put on the back when corporate needs dictated that I leave my family on the back burner too much and therefore act more as an advisor and fact finder/systems instructor instead. I remain hourly so that IF a project gets too time intensive management is completely aware of what it it taking.

That said... I have daughters that way out earn me and are in different levels of purchasing and management. I have continued and they continue to share the concept that you can do anything you put your mind to. Being a "girl" should not be a reason to not do anything. I think the perspective of business is much more accepting of the fact that there are families and even embrace (depending on the company) having time for men to be members of a family as well.

My advice to you as a middle school student is to try out different jobs. I have worked in a library, driven trucks, worked on photo processors and conveyor systems. JA is a great opportunity if you have that available. Try temporary job that will give you pay and experience to decide if you like an industry and then see if that company has an education benefit that will help you to get where you want to be. Find that "thing" that you like and ask yourself "how can I make money doing this"? I went to college thinking that I was going to teach Home Economics and Industrial Arts - but I ended up working in industry on the inside offices helping get things done in the warehouses and managing the catering, etc. as needed. My "students" are 23-70 years old. And I am excited to come to work each day. So you can see that my education still gave me what I needed to do my job, but was not what I expected to be doing in the end. Allow your passion to be something other than your job. But be sure that what you choose to make your money doing is something that will give you joy. Life will be very sad if it is not. And NEVER let them tell you that you can't do something because you are a girl (woman, lady, pick the term you most prefer).

Enjoy!

It is always worth going after something that you truly enjoy. Think about what you enjoy and what makes you happy. If leading a business or working business will make you happy each day, pursue it! I have a lot of fun meeting people around the world and learning how to make their lives easier, and am always happy to help other women to do the same.

Hi Dulce,
I'm not sure if you meant business woman such as majoring in business in college and having a career in marketing, management or operations or owning your own business. I will comment on both to get you covered. Owning your own business is hard work. You work many long hours, and anyone who owns a business will tell you that they don't make a profit for the first few years. Don't let that keep you from starting your own business though. The benefits could be: make your own hours, you are your own boss, once you start to make a profit that is your money to keep. The more successful your business is, in the future you can work less and spend more time traveling or doing what you enjoy.

After college, would you consider running a large company worth it? Bringing great ideas to the table, leading others, and helping make the company and other employees successful? Then being a business woman is worth it. But just remember, we all start at entry level positions, learn and grow, and then move up in companies. You have to be patient and learn your craft.

I suggest thinking about what would make you happy in the long run and then researching those types of careers. Is it helping others? Careers with the most pay? Careers with the most flexibility? and go from there.

Hi Dulce! Being a business woman is different for everyone. I am a business woman but I don't have my own business. I work for a big company and I love it. There are a lot of different degrees you can get in college that will lead you into the business world. Ask questions in school, learn from the adults in your community and read. I think it would be great for you to start reading books written by business women!

Here are a few books you might like -
1. The Unicorn Who Sold Zero Cupcakes by Brenda Li
2. Whoever Heard of a Flying Bird? by David Cunliffe
3. The Treehouse Trio by Lauren Eresman

I hope this helps you!!
